And yes, people on other instances can see your posts if they follow you.

They can also see what you post when you use hashtags, e.g., #newheretoo, #mastodonmigration.

Likes and boosts are indeed cumulative.

Make use of hashtags--you will have more responses since more people will read what you have to say.

It only takes a few seconds to write a descriptive text for pictures, gifs, and other images.

Mastodon is the first platform where I've encountered such a request.

If you are on a general-interest server (like I am), when you see someone interesting who is on a more special-interest server, go check out that server and those people.

Looks like you are using an app? Many have found the apps to be somewhat lacking. Try using the website directly, it's easier and more featured. I'm on an Android device using Firefox (go #OpenSource !) and this is what my screen looks like. The search thingy you are looking for is the hashtag third from the top.

What do you mean when you say it doesn't recognize your instance? The intance is your home server. Are you using the Tusky app? Try using the Mastodon site (not an app). I'm also using an Adroid device, with Firefox browser, and it is much better than the apps I've tried. It is kinda confusing to start
