I've bought everything thing Bob Mould has released since I discovered him in the early 1990s, but I somehow never picked up Patch the Sky when it came out; I was aware of it at the time but consciously put it off. I don't remember what exactly was going on in early 2016 (I know David Bowie's passing was part of it) but I remember I was just not feeling it, and in hindsight I think perhaps my subconscious was gently steering me away from developing downer memory associations with an album by one of my favorite artists.
I've somehow never heard a single track from this album.
Anyway, it's my birthday month and I decided this would be one of my small indulgences.
Very fine songwriting and performances by the trio as always, and I'm digging the slightly lighter touch after 'Beauty and Ruin' - I'll be curious to compare the digital tracks to the vinyl pressing; the vinyl sounds very loud/saturated overall, which was also a thing on 'Sunshine Rock', IIRC. #rekkids #bobmould
