It's amazing to see BBC pick this up. I'm not sure why these big studios are even necessary. The Internet allows for digital distribution, and there's amazing independent theaters all over the country. Ditch the big studios permanently, and for fucks sake, let us purchase the movies DIRECTLY AT RELEASE for a reasonable price.

I don't use #reddit, but every description of it that I read reminds me of Internet #newsgroups that we interacted with in the 80's and 90's. Maybe there's a way for that data store and protocol to be the basis of a free and open source version of Reddit's replacement?

Trivia about me.

One of the first Usenet Newsgroups I joined was AHWW
(alt.horror.werewolves) which began as a group about Werewolves in books and film. But then evolved into a group where people opened up about their inner feelings.

We called ourselves "Weres" back then as not everbody saw themselves as a Wolf, but some other creature instead.

Commonly there were Bears, Tigers, Foxes and others.

The word Therian was adopted later but I've no idea who coined it.

I configured #slrn and took a look at several #newsgroups, including some that I used to participate in over 20 years ago.

Completely different vibe from the modern web. There was a relatively recent post in comp.security.pgp about installing PGP 6.x on Windows XP. The thread included some classic flaming.

I came across people using Windows Live Mail to post to Usenet.

What an interesting and bizarre experience.

Non so se lo è anche per voi, ma per me #Mastodon è ogni giorno di più il "social delle belle scoperte", più che quello del meme ricondiviso alla nausea (sì, ok, ci sono anche quelli e alcuni sono divertenti, ma non ci sono SOLO quelli). Libri, giochi da tavola, film, brani musicali, idee. E' il tipo di social che abbiamo perso con l'avvento di #Facebook e simili. Il tipo di social che avevamo nei #newsgroups, in #irc, nei #forum. E lo è perché ci siete VOI. 💗

so... been here for a little over a month. I have to say, I've become a bit obsessed with the Mastodon experience. the people, the debates, so much of this reminds me of my early #Internet days browsing #Usenet #newsgroups and finding a whole new world of people and conversations out there. A truly mind and world- opening experience that was.

The longer I'm on Mastodon the more I'm convinced it's the way forward.

The idea of the #fediverse having servers maintained by a community invested in making it a safe and unique place. Reminds me of the early days of the #internet - #newsgroups of diverse discussion, #forums for all types of topics, and live chat on #irc - days of a distributed ecosystem that anyone could be a part of.

I'm hopeful the #twittermigration continues, not for #twitter to fail but for #mastodon to succeed.

The longer I'm on Mastodon the more I'm convinced it's the way forward.
