I'm a subscriber to #Newsguard. I also read that article. These fake sites are throwaways. They likely run on their own and are workshopping towards improvement. It won't be long before it will be near impossible for even the most discriminating reader to tell the difference.

People will read it if they are prompted to, say in a Facebook or Instagram feed.

I pay for #NewsGuard, which is a browser extension that a) alerts me when I'm on a site that's poorly rated (by professionals) for its news accuracy and b) highlights such sites in search and social before I even click. Of course, it doesn't work on Mastodon as it'll have to track instances (although I wonder if signature code could do it).
