, Minister of Broadcasting and Media, comments on the Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill, that will force one set of media corporations to pay another set of media corporations, to link to or quote from their stories.

"Any right thinking person or right thinking party would support this, because you don't want to get offside with the media do you..."

Another good video by @rbreich . Posting here because he has not. Yet?.

The media’s obsession with “balanced coverage” is nonsense.

There is no middle ground between democracy and fascism.

If the headlines on your information sources are not the climate crisis, threat of fascism, seriousness of Covid, guns #1 cause of death for children and inequality you should ask yourself why that is.

Those are the real threats we all face.

The loosening of ownership rules in 80s and 90s (and started with Reagan and continued through Trump) set the stage. But that didn't make what happened inevitable. There are lots of culprits. Rupert Murdoch is a big part of that.

They do much more than "slant" the news.

Or so we think.

Ownership rules could and should be tightened again, as we noted here:

"Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has in recent days fiercely criticised Meta for barring access to critical safety information about a spate of wildfires, which is being disseminated by news companies.

...Meta has told Canadian news outlets that users can still access safety messages from government agencies and emergency services."

Good to hear the focus on .

We live in a world populated by relentlessly negative stories.

The for-profit sector of understands that news which activates the fear centers of our brain, tends to get more attention. What that says about us humans, is an interesting question. Theories abound 😜

Sadly this has left many of us with a distorted and fearful world view.

There are many good things happening which are all too rarely reported.

I guess I see it as both. Definitely peer to peer conversation. I see journalism posts as a sparking point for peer to peer engagement.

I’d also add that, / continues to be a sticky site because it’s the primary location for breaking news.

I’m not suggesting that we should want to be the same as that blighted service, but I do think the long term viability of Mastodon will be enhanced by quality content

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) News is leaving Twitter (“X”). They all should have left a long time ago.

As the BBC has now set up an Instance on the Fediverse, all public news organizations and and institutions should do the same.

39) Things are not going well in the campaign.

One wonders whether his call for "throat slitting" directed at members of the Federal Government and invocations of the mystical and mythical Deep State were designed to make seem tougher than ?

General reaction across the seems to be one of disgust. There doesn't seem to be major fist bumping going on within the faithful

The Northern Territory government has banned journalists from a local media organisation from asking politicians questions. The government said that it is only a "blog" not a real news organisation.

What even is journalism, and who decides?

I think it depends how you define the term. I understand as a news story that has a deceptive headline designed to lure people in to read. The actual substance of the story differs wildly to the headline.

Now I think there are all sorts of degrees of this. Lets first affirm that a headline is designed to get attention there is nothing inherrently wrong with that in my view.

Legitimate comapnies do not do this
