Last weekend we got a good old from abroad.

When I handled the card something seemed weird, not right, off...

It had identical stamps on both sides, no pictures, just the handwritten card text.

???

Turned out the card directed to us was carrying a second postcard piggy back.

Postal ink to invalidate the stamps got onto the picture side of the card and glued this other postcard to our postcard face to face 🙂 so both picture sides were glued together and by coincidence the postal sorter in the U.S. saw our address on the card, not the other address, and so we got the glued-double-postcard delivered to our mailbox.

Someone in is in for a slightly delayed holiday postcard from one of the U.S. national parks which took a slight detour via Germany.

🤩

I'm currently visiting the Outback town of Broken Hill. I'm doing some family history research and have thus visited the Cemetery (40 hectares (100 acres), ~45,000 internments). It appears that crushed glass (beer bottles?) is a popular ornamentation - I don't recall seeing that elsewhere.

is moving in on state forest, near Urunga, on Gumbaynggirr lands. Elders and activists are leading protest and trying to raise awareness. Please do all you can to help. As usual, Forestry Corp is playing fast and light with the law, and police were already at the site when people arrived.

"They were met with fencing and a contingent of police and fire officers, who doused a sacred fire lit by the protesters, before semi-trailers loaded with stripped logs drove out of the forest."

Newry is part of the highly endangered Gondawanan subtropical coastal/lowland rainforests - some of the oldest and most diverse forests in Australia, and some of the oldest on Earth.

Newry is a sacred site to the Gumbaynggirr for mens ritual, and many individual trees are culturally significant or sacred in their own right.

Forestry Corp NSW is entirely owned by the NSW Government, and has a history of blatantly breaking the laws it is supposed to operate under. Their operations have made consistent losses for years, requiring taxpayer subsidies in order to ensure the killing of our native rainforests can continue. Without these subsidies, it would stop.

Forestry Corp only exists because we allow it to.

While wandering through a paddock at sunset this evening the dogs and I came across this echidna doing its own sunset wandering. Unusually, it didn't curl up in a protective ball when it heard us but, rather, kept its head up to check us out. The dogs are well behaved and mostly ignored it.

Feel like maybe someone needs to suggest that Heritage Guest House in Bombala should update their google business listing photo with a new photo. Or just any photo other than this one.

Another fine day in the Northern Tablelands. It wasn’t too cold on this morning's frosty walk with the dogs, only -5°C (23°F) which is better than the -11°C (12°F) we had a few mornings ago.

This photograph was taken as the sun rose above the low ridge behind me and thus gives the trees a warm glow in the golden hour.

[Local sunrise is currently at 6:51 am].

Well, this morning’s walk with the dogs was a doozy. The temperature when we set out before sunrise was around -11°C (12°F). It was definitely a balaclava-wearing morning. Now, only a couple of hours later (9 am), it’s already warmed up to 6°C (43°F).

The dogs and I had a somewhat colder morning walk today with a pre-sunrise temperature of -8.0°C (17.6°F).

The photo from this walk shows hoar frost crystals growing on a old fence at the side of the road.

Another cold, frosty morning with an overnight minimum of -9.1°C (15.5°F). The low, just-risen sun gives a strong golden hue to this woodland scene. The local kangaroos, as usual, are alert but not alarmed as the dogs and I pass by.

Another cold, frosty morning was had here with the overnight minimum temperature being -7.8°C (18°F).

This photograph from this morning's walk is an example of a common Winter occurrence here - a fog bow [1].

This requires that the low, rising sun is at my back and that a low, shallow mist sits on the ground.

We had a decent frost this morning with an overnight temperature of -8.0°C (17.6°F). The photograph is of hoar frost growing atop a fence post about 30 minutes after sunrise.

Much of the reason for it being cold here in winter is that we're 1020 metres (3,350 ft) above sea level atop The Great Dividing Range.
