Trade and tariff policy later provided another multibillion dollar subsidy to American newspapers. In 1911, the US removed the duty on Canadian-made newsprint. By 1957, US had imported 110,000,000 tons of it, about 80% of domestic consumption in 1950. Imports rose for decades after. Prevailing duties before 1911 were $3.75-6.00 per ton.

Shortly after finishing this, my charcoal clutch broke about a minute after I put it down on the table. It shot parts clear across the room. Guess I gotta go get a new one.

The piece traces global newsprint flows in the mid-20th century and shows the importance of US-Canada relations to them. For many people, being an informed citizen meant relying on foreign trade in newsprint.

I'm trying the print paper on Sundays option. What are your favorite things to do with #newsprint when you're done reading it?
My impression is that print can be more environmentally friendly than digital if you read it many times or share it between many people, but is less environmentally friendly if you only read it once. Maybe I could offer to pass it on to neighbors when I'm done reading?
