It took me a month to get to this but it’s very good. strongtowns.org/journal/2023/7

Merges the personal with public policy, kid who grew up here with professional.

“…I-94 continues to do active harm…

So I will resist my own impulse to triangulate and think smaller, and instead embrace those who are asking what kind of city we really want to live in in 50 years. And why on earth there should still be a freeway running through it.”

" 'Park blocks' are coming to Los Angeles after the City Council voted in June to pilot the concept of rerouting traffic in one neighborhood to reclaim blocks of some streets as public spaces free from motor vehicles." " I sure hope this pilot succeeds...and spreads to other urban areas. smartcitiesdive.com/news/park-

Just closed every window in my house in a suburb because of the incredible racket being made by gas-powered, air-polluting lawn machinery. We need to house more people and grow less grass.

Florida's guidance tells road designers how to translate context into target speeds, including transitions through rural town centers.

It also tells local governments what their built environment should look like.

It was basically the brain-child of one developer, started well before was a buzzword. Clearly, he was either on the good side of the zoning board or they just didn’t care, because there’s no way this would get built today.

A couple of weeks ago I emailed one of the city council members that I voted for on the basis that she mentioned bike and pedestrian infrastructure to ask about connecting a local shopping center to the new bike path they just finished putting in last year. I actually got a response back and she's looking into it! I doubt anything will come of it, but at least I'm putting the bug in her ear and doing what I can to improve the bike network!

Seabrook, Washington, is the first full-scale beach town built according to the principles of New Urbanism on the West Coast. Founded in 2004, Seabrook is sited on a bluff that offers tremendous ocean views and protects against sea level rise.

"The New Urbanism is a design movement toward complete, compact, connected communities—but it is also a generator of ideas that transform the landscape. Communities are shaped by the movement and flow of ideas, and the New Urbanism has been a particularly rich source of the currents that have directed planning and development in recent decades."

Older shorter city design will be the most versatile. Past 5-7 stories unable to recoup enough energy from solar panels & thermal pump geothermal to attenuate the power loads in the building.

Energy needs to be included in design and to allow for to be installed.

As oil/gas inputs fall will need to adjust buildings. Spreading out the density will be the hallmark of resilient cities. I feel cities already in this range will fair far better
