Today in 1949, Newfoundland joins Canada, becoming the 10th province.
Prior to this, it had been the Dominion of Newfoundland, and then a colony of Britain. On June 22, 1948, 52.3% of the island's residents voted to join Canada.
Joey Smallwood became the 1st premier.

I was invited to accompany @StevenKennard on one of his teaching trips, this time to Newfoundland (1/4 of my family hail from NFLD ).
This lighthouse is iconic and the day was perfect for our only day of sightseeing.

Today in 1900, Joey Smallwood was born. He was the main force behind bringing Newfoundland into Confederation in 1949. He served as the 1st premier of the province from 1949 to 1972. As premier, he championed the welfare state & modernized education & transportation on the island

Today in 1985, Arrow Air Flight 1285R crashes at Gander Airport in NFLD. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all 256 people on board.
It remains the deadliest aviation accident on Canadian soil. It is believed ice contamination on the wing led to the crash.

Just finished 1899. Holding judgements yet.. except the map.
In the first episode, we are given co-ordinates for the Promethius and shown a map (#Nfld makes an appearance!), The Kerberos 130nm north of the Promethius, which tracks 7.25 hrs at 18 knots).
Just past the Milne seamounts and south of the Flemish cap. Land is ~500km away, whereas to turn back is ~3350km. So towing the boat back doesn't work out?
