What is the point of doctors & nurses joining unions if those unions surrender their members to the risk of disability & death during an ongoing pandemic, & then sell them out for a pitiful 5% pay rise that goes nowhere towards addressing daily living costs? And all this while hours & working conditions are not only poor but actually traumatic?

@RDHale I hope with every cell of my body that nurses will win. This reminds me of the teachers strikes in the 80s when my husb (also a teacher) and I were newly-weds and losing pay we couldn't afford when we struck.

You dont strike bc its fun or a day off. You strike bc you desperately want things to change bc it can't go on like this. Shame on the MSM for disparaging the work of nurses and doctors.

They train for years and work ridiculous hours to keep us alive and all the Govt gives them is a clap.

The latest pay offer from the government was pathetic and was rejected by the Royal College of Nursing.

I and my colleagues are at our lowest ebb, we're exhausted, and we have no energy left. There are record levels of sickness. So many of us are looking for a way out. This country is haemorrhaging "shop floor" nurses, there is zero incentive.

Tomorrow will be the usual post- Bank Holiday chaos in work as patients who should have come in over the weekend turn up, much sicker. Combined with this, it's the start of the doctors' strike.

Nevertheless, our doctor colleagues have our full support in their strike action.

You have no idea how hard they work and how badly they're treated. They deserve far more than they will ever be paid.

Well, no excuses anymore for the grade e economist Hunt - now he can fund the pay rise, and reduce pollution at the same time at no cost and with no danger of hitting inflation. The IFS said it disputed the Treasury’s figures, arguing the cost of an increase from the current 3.5% average offer to 5.5% could be even less than £5bn. It said between 30% and 40% of the pay rise would be clawed back in higher VAT, tax ..the cost down to £3bn.
