In 1999, #NorthernIreland secretaries were issues documents on how to correctly refer to #Ireland and #Britain. The article describes it as being written for #PeterMendelson, but it sounds like a standard document issues to all secretaries.

Apparently as late as 1999, #NI Secretaries had to be specifically advised not to refer to the #RepublicOfIreland as the #IrishFreeState, a political entity that had not existed since 1937.

I would say it is reflection of a section of wider society in #NI (#DUP/#Oneseatwonder represents them)

Not all of us have a hissy fit over other languages been spoken or represented.

This the #DUP trying to show they have some clout on a council they no longer dominate, which is difficult for them to accept.

Yes very true about Scotland and Wales - however at least all three parties stand in Sco & Wal. Only the #Tories stand in NI - and that is normally humiliating for the poor sod that stands for them!

I think many people in #NI would like the opportunity to take responsibility for our own future - away from the influence of Westminster.

We all don't agree with #DUP humiliating themselves by begging for some crumbs of the master's table.

I don't rate Starmer either but I live in NI - what I think doesn't matter. I can't vote for the party. I don't rate any English politician - they all have their flaws.

What I will say is we in #NI get the #lightweight, #hasbeen or a #nobody as SoS. We aren't on anyone's priority list.

So it doesn't bother me if he is bland or has zero charisma - that is the type of politician that we get sent from Westminster*

From this particular person in #NI - I wish they would say it formally, so it is out in the open. It is the world's worst kept secret. Also the DUP would ave to face the reality that is now before them.

It is simple to why the DUP supported Brexit - prove their loyalty and bring back the physical border. They want to try and stop the deepening links between the two parts of the island

Then I can't see the #DUP ever attracting any new voters especially the younger ones. They aren't capable of changing to make them more attractive. Doug may be trying to change the #UUP but the traditionalists in his party won't accept they need to change either.

So it NI will continue to move away from the Unionist parties towards SF/Alliance which you can argue - are looking good when compared to the #Unionist parties.

Something needs to change in #NI
