Du meine Güte, ist die erste Filmfassung von #NightmareAlley schlecht. Es gibt einzelne Glanzpunkte, aber erzählerisch liegt da viel im Argen und nicht nur das weichgespülte Ende.

#GuillermoDelToro hat die krasse Geschichte mit ihrer harschen Moral wirklich am besten erzählt, und selbst #WilliamLindsayGresham legt bei aller Überforderung mit dem Stoff besser vor. Ich verstehe nicht, wie Leute ernsthaft den Film von #EdmundGoulding 1947 vorziehen können.

Und es ist die Beschreibung eines "bum", eines "Penners", am Lagerfeuer. 🤡

Das Zitat ist symptomatisch. Sagte ich schon, dass die Glaubwürdigkeit der Geschichte mit ihrer Zuspitzung rapide abnimmt und der Autor wohl seine Kämpfe mit dem Stoff hatte?

#GuillermoDelToro hat da nach meiner Erinnerung einiges anders, besser, gelöst.

#NightmareAlley ist ein sehr seltsames Buch.

Der Erstlingsroman ist spürbar, #WilliamLindsayGresham hat alles sehr disparat angelegt und nach meinem Eindruck auch mit dem Stoff gekämpft. Gleichzeitig mischt er virtuos Textsorten und Effekte.

Hauptfigur Stan ist kalt und unsympathisch, Gresham ergreift erzählerisch immer wieder Partei für Stans Opfer. Großes Unbehagen bei mir Stand Seite 170, großes Bangen auch.

#Babylon - three hours of retread Hollywood stories. Act One was well played - and actually could have been filmed last week at any club in Berlin. Different cast, same scene.

#NightmareAlley is a petty and un-transparent cliche of a noir parable. All the budget seemingly spent on the sets and costumes of Act One. Can’t see that the studio spent much after that. A waste of time and talent.
