I’m flabbergasted and not a little impressed by the #surveyors’ precision evident on this early #NineteenthCentury cast #iron #mile marker. I have seen distances recorded to the nearest 1/4 mile (440yd resolution); distances recorded to the nearest furlong (220yd resolution); but never one recording distance to the nearest #yard!!! I wonder who needed to know it was exactly 1056yds to Stocks? #Roads #LandscapeHistory (I know I’m cheating but it’s too good not to tag with #FingerPostFriday)

Slavery isn't sustainable compared to coerced wage labor, but while it works it's way more profitable. Which doesn't mean they wouldn't chain you up in their fields and factories tomorrow morning if they could pull it off. They can't, but that's the only reason they don't.

I have a #puzzle for #histodons. These #Cyphers appear on a #wall in the #cathedral close in #Winchester. I have looked in all the usual places, presuming these to be #dates and #initials (trade directories etc) but to no avail. They are not #flood marks, or #insurance plaques, or #advertisements as far as I can tell. So any other ideas or leads gratefully received! #EighteenthCentury #NineteenthCentury
