What the Dickens? Our Mutual Friend (my favourite book ever) - YouTube. Haven’t watched this video yet, but saving for later. Our Mutual Friend is easily my favourite Dickens novel, and one of my absolute all time favourite novels ever. youtube.com/watch?v=HKIG2UPlfl

"On Sunday, June 16, 1854, two young Black New Yorkers named Elizabeth Jennings and Sarah Adams attempted to board one of the Third Avenue Railroad Company cars to head to church. Upon noticing their race, the conductor instructed both women to get off the car and wait for a second car for African Americans that was still a few blocks away. The women refused …”

Checking the newly released criminal registers on , looking for Moore relatives. And OMG they have mugshots! I’m still hoping some of my Irish Tate relatives in (in and out of prison a *lot*) may have prison mugshots. But haven’t found them yet. ancestry.co.uk/search/collecti

Although people have appeared at the bar of the from time to time to apologise and thus purge their contempt I understand that no one has actually been put in the cell in question since the ! So perhaps the authorities should check if it is usable. I might add that any sensible person expecting to appear before a - as I did a bit over twenty years back - would know about this - just in case!

An American from 1833 commenting on how much glass there is in Paris. I love his metaphor: "the frequent glass realizes the idea of every one's carrying a window in his bosom."

On this day! Remember the Maine! Button from my grandmother that was meant to commemorate the sinking of the USS Maine on 15 Feb 1898 in Havana. The sinking was caused by a fire next to their munitions storage, but due to claims of a Spanish mine precipitating the explosion - it started the Spanish-American War.

The trivia painting will post later today, for now here are two paintings I made over the summer on Hermit Mountain in Erving Massachusetts.

From 1867 - 1899 John Smith, otherwise known as The Hermit of Erving lived in a cave just below where I was painting.

Here's a recent article about him:

One photographic record from the above article.

Sydney McGovern:
Born 1867 1869 or 1870, Sydney

McGovern used eight aliases, and was employed as a labourer and bootmaker. Aged 10, he was sent to reform vessel Vernon moored off Cockatoo Island, and was aged around 14 when he was sentenced for stealing in 1884. His charge sheet in 1917 lists extensive tattoos, and charges include assault and theft from a police constable. Sentenced to 10 years for garrotting and stealing 3 shillings from a fruit seller. Often after release he was again quickly sentenced on charges usually relating to drunkenness.

This is the heartbroken sea ogress, who is also a sea guardian, from Thai poetic tale, Pra Aphaimanee (พระอภัยมณี /Prince Aphaimanee) by Sunthon Phu (สุนทรภู่). Written in the early , the story reveals international contact in Southeast Asian seas in the high time of . The description of the sea ogress in the story resembles Western representation of the South Sea peoples. She was naked, hot-headed, and animalistic.
