It's also weird to think that not one of us actually heard the music as it was playing RIGHT THEN--we all heard the song as it was 16 measures earlier, and were recording ourselves against that. So only if you pull it up via archive can you here the "true" version of the track.

I think I kept that bass line or something like it going for 15 minutes or more. My hands were getting cramped by the end.

TL;DR: live music jam across the internet; latency is deliberately set to musical measures so you are jamming with the group's previous phrase iteration. Weird, but works.

Right now I'm listening to a jam by musicians in France, Israel, Russia, Vietnam, and China. That's a bit chaotic, but really entertaining.

Flipping the player channels around and back to the right places happens in a server. There are public servers run by interested musos, shown on the #ninjam site.
The server code is FOSS and the github is linked from the site. Anyone with bandwidth and the skills could run it.
The client is either a binary, or by downloading a DAW called Reaper, which takes a ninjam plugin and allows multiple channels to be sent, with effects, VST etc.
Recording of the jam is supported.

Thought I'd try out Ninjam to see if there were still public servers I could connect to. Had a groove plugged into my tablet in case I got through and things were quiet enough to mess about.

Connected to one while trying settings and there was a whole group of musos already jamming there, who saw me arrive and welcomed me. So I quickly called up a Hammond and jammed along on the touchscreen keyboard for a few minutes.

I'll call that success.
