Erg sympathiek!
"On the contrary, the otherwise stable Netherlands has been thrown off balance. Huge protests, burning bales of straw, political divisions, intense polarisation between rural and urban areas.
And for what? To save an #agriculture that may be technologically world-leading, but no longer means more to the economy than 1.4 per cent of GDP."
Insanely well written (in Danish 🇩🇰 ), interesting article on #sustainability (or not) of Dutch agriculture in @informeren

Bij deze maak ik bekend dat ik mij niet verkiesbaar stel voor de Tweede Kamer.
Persoonlijke redenen en het gure klimaat maakten dat ik deze moeilijke beslissing moest nemen.
I didn’t want to check the stupid news to check if Mark Rutte and his stupid party had caused the stupid government to collapse. So I checked the nice website HasTheGovtCollapsedYet and it said Ja!
I still don’t want to check the stupid news and provide youse with the traditional stupid scathing commentary. I am done with the stupid and I’m going back to reading Ancillary Sword. #NLpol

Canada of course has programmes to help out poorer parts of the country, notably equalisation, the regional development agencies ( #ACOA in NL), and the structure of EI. Those programmes have clearly done some good for people, but they've also mostly failed in terms of creating stronger local economies. Indeed there are arguments that such programmes have been counter-productive at times.
Canadians should help Newfoundland and Labrador, but we also need a clear legal framework.
@fssofdeath Well, if spending and revenue don't balance, the first place to look for an explanation is with those who made the decisions. https://nationalpost.com/opinion/john-ivison-flat-broke-newfoundland-is-a-cautionary-tale-for-other-big-spending-governments-in-canada makes the claim that NL hired too many civil servants and increased their wages too much — but probably there's more to the story, such as low pre-existing wages. #MuskratFalls is clearly a financial disaster of its own, though I don't know what went wrong there. Bad management? Over-optimistic planning?
"Even with more help for Muskrat Falls — Ottawa agreed to provide $5.2 billion towards costs now calculated at $13.1 billion — Newfoundland’s books remain in alarming shape, with debt servicing costs swallowing more cash than anything outside of health care. A poll in January found that more than half the province’s residents expect it to go bankrupt within a few years."
Liberals ensure the Muskrat Falls boondoggle is everyone's burden

"Things started to go downhill in 2008, when the province entered a period of high spending by hiring thousands more public servants and paying wage increases far beyond inflation."
"Oil revenues were being used as an annual revenue source, rather than squirrelled away in a future fund, and the province funded the Muskrat Falls hydro project, which has run billions over budget."
"While revenues saw peaks and troughs, expenditures went in only one direction.
Spending rose from $4.97 billion in 2004/05 to $8.97 billion this year – an increase of 80 per cent."
Terrible. Maybe the feds should bail out Newfoundland and Labrador, but we really need a #bankruptcy law for provinces.
John Ivison: Flat-broke Newfoundland is a cautionary tale for other big spending governments in Canada

"And all the while, even during the days, if I may call them that, of oil “prosperity,” government spending always outclassed revenue, by Greene’s estimate by a full quarter of the budgets — 25 per cent."
How horrible is debt! How miserable the consequences of spending more than one earns! [0]
The feds should pass a #bankruptcy law for provinces and territories.
[0] And yet Canadians elected a second PM Trudeau...

"Newfoundland and Labrador has escaped the skeleton hand of bankruptcy thus far only because the federal programs to combat COVID-19 brought new cash into the province. It is not a good thing when a pandemic is the reason a province is not in bankruptcy."

@ezralevant@mstdn.foxfam.club Depends what powers the law of Newfoundland and Labrador gives to their election officials.
