So ... does putting things like and/or in your bio actually do anything?

I mean, besides alerting amoral data-scrapers that your personal data is extra valuable?

... asking for a friend.

@atomicpoet Just searched a post I made yesterday on there and it showed up.

I have all of the available common flags for opting out of indexes on my accounts (, , , in bio, and account marked to not be indexed in settings)

Seems like it ignores all of them, and the only opt out they offer is a link to the post privacy section of the Mastodon docs.

Public posts are public, and should be expected to be permanent, but still seems condescending.

This is just how we name these sorts of things now.

Paste a mastodon url that begins a thread here and we'll roll it into something presentable
Respects noindex (Mastodon user preference), , , tags in bio.

I intend for this to be a tool to share toots in a way that's presentable to a wider audience outside of Mastodon and that's it. 100% tracker free. Every toot is linked back to its source....

@malin Maybe it's smart enough to obey the on my profile or the fact that I have search engine indexing turned off?

@dcid Here‘s something I don’t understand: the search cache contains tons of accounts that specifically list or on their profile. Why would you not honor that?

That sort of behavior just begs for a widespread suspension of your instance.

I'm having this wild experience where I recall being able to put a sort of and/or command in robots.txt, not just meta tags.

Was that deprecated when I wasn't looking, or should I just blame the ? :eyes_squint:

@naught101 totally! that would actually be nice. an opt-in version of or would be a useful thing to have, especially if it became a norm that every tool should check the user bio looking for common tags. there’s nothing wrong with crawling when it is explicitly agreed to, in public, where the users followers can see it and can make their choices accordingly. what is wrong is techbros building tools that violate user consent just because it’s convenient to them to do so

Slightly unfriendly reminder: if you are writing a bot on Mastodon, please respect the tag in people’s bios and have your bot skip their accounts. Similarly, do not crawl, index, or archive accounts where people have included a tag or something similar. Users have expressed an explicit opt-out preference and, speaking only for myself, if I catch you doing so against my stated permissions I will block you and your bot immediately

: why some Mastodon users prefer tag on profile

No archive is a directive search engine crawlers. Here is a pretty good explanation.
