TEPCO Begins Dumping Contaminated Water

August 24, 2023

"TEPCO began dumping contaminated water at 1pm Thursday (Japan time). International opposition and outcry have not been resolved. We document that along with the scope of the contamination here. While TEPCO has insisted the water only contains Tritium that is untrue. The long list of other contaminants can be found here [link in comments]."

New leak heightens international concerns

August 18, 2023

"The latest reported leak of nuclear-contaminated water from the nuclear power plant has again heightened international concerns over the competence of Tokyo Electric Power Company () and the lack of effective regulation from the Japanese government, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Thursday.

"Spokesperson Wang Wenbin made the remarks at a press briefing when asked to comment on media reports that TEPCO recently confirmed a leak of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant as a result of a crack in the hose used to transport the wastewater.

"The legitimacy and safety of 's ocean discharge plan have long been questioned by the international community, and people in Fukushima have pointed out many times that since the nuclear plant accident, TEPCO's handling of the aftermath has been highly problematic, Wang said.

"People are questioning TEPCO's ability to properly handle the nuclear-contaminated water, Wang added.

"'Can TEPCO handle the wastewater in a safe and responsible way throughout the process? Can it manage the 30-year-long discharge without mistakes and errors? Can it ensure the long-term effectiveness and reliability of the treatment facility? Can it conduct wastewater sampling and monitoring activities in strict compliance with the rules? The international community is very doubtful about that,' Wang said.

"Wang reiterated that the Japanese side should take seriously the legitimate concerns of the international community and the people in Japan, stop pushing through the ocean discharge plan, have full and sincere communication with neighboring countries, dispose of the nuclear-contaminated water in a truly responsible way, and accept rigorous international oversight."

Leaks found in hose to transfer -contaminated

Editor: huaxia, 2023-08-11

"The operator of the crippled nuclear power plant has found leaks in a hose used to transfer nuclear-contaminated wastewater, local media reported on Friday.

"Tokyo Electric Power Company () conducted a probe after higher-than-usual levels of material were detected in in the dike around a storage tank, public broadcaster NHK reported.

"An inspection found that some water had leaked from cracks of about four centimeters on a hose being used for transferring radioactive wastewater at the time, the report said.

"As the hose was used to transfer radioactive wastewater from another tank, TEPCO analyzed water in the dike around the tank and detected up to 67,000 becquerels of tritium per liter, which exceeded 60,000 becquerels, the standard set by the Japanese government for releasing tritium into the environment.

"TEPCO said that someone caused the cracks with a cutter blade while removing the packaging around the hose after it was delivered, adding that the water that leaked remained inside the barrier.

"TEPCO added that the leak would not affect the plan to discharge the radioactive wastewater from the plant into the ocean.

"Despite strong opposition from neighboring and countries, as well as local fishermen over the irreversible impacts on the marine environment and public health, the Japanese government and TEPCO have been pushing for release of the radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant hit by a massive earthquake and an ensuing tsunami in March 2011."

’s lack of transparency on water is sparking fear in neighbors, says Japanese expert

Naoya Sekiya said the Japanese government has been more concerned with international organizations than with persuading neighboring countries

By Kim So-youn, Tokyo correspondent, July 24, 2023

"The reason , , and other countries are concerned about the safety of Japan’s imminent release of contaminated water currently being stored at the plant into the ocean is the result of Tokyo’s failure to provide adequate information, an expert claimed in a recent interview.

"Naoya Sekiya, an associate professor at the University of Tokyo, said in an interview published Friday by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper that the 'anxieties of people in South Korea, China, and other neighboring countries have not been resolved' in connection with the water’s release.

"He also said a 'big factor in this issue' was 'the Japanese government not providing adequate information.'"

Statement on

August 3, 2023

"The Green Party of the United States () and the Green Party of Hawai’i stand in solidarity with our fellow in and when calling for the end of the near-shore release of 1.33 million tons of contaminated water from the power plant into the Pacific Ocean. The Green Party of the United States and the Green Party of Hawai’i urges the Government of to respect existing international treaties that ban the releasing of nuclear waste into the oceans. We also join the Green Party Korea and the Greens Japan in calling for the cancellation of ocean releasing plans. For this, we call for a public review of methods of on-land storage such as 'large tank storage' and 'mortar solidification treatment'.

"Up to this point, independent review has not been allowed. We demand a public, independent review and the citizens of the Asia-Pacific have a right to know about the safety of such release.

"Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has long concerned themselves with . TEPCO is one of many that internalizes profits and externalizes their losses. We call shame upon TEPCO for their unwillingness to listen to the general public in and take their concerns seriously.

"Kim Yeon-cheol, executive chairman of the National Federation of Fishermen's Associations in South Korea said, 'In South Korea, people who feel uneasy about releasing marine products into the sea are already refraining from consuming seafood. We should not catch and provide seafood until it has been verified that it is completely safe.'

"The majority of the public in South Korea and Japan does not trust the International Atomic Energy Association ()’s report finding the release of water safe. This report has not even completed sample analysis of contaminated water. We encourage the IAEA to build that trust network with the Nation Federation of Fishermen’s Associations of South Korea and the Fishermen’s Union of Fukushima Japan and listen to their concerns about livelihood.

"The Green Party of the United States urges TEPCO and IAEA to gain the trust of the public. Currently, TEPCO and IAEA’s incentives lie in keeping profits and protecting the leadership of the right-wing, nationalist Japanese government instead of the concerns of the average Korean, Japanese, Chinese, or Taiwanese citizen. Let’s create an East Asia and a world where the average person can live free of the worry about food safety."

Interview: report on nuke wastewater discharge plan wrong, says scientist

"The International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) report on 's planned dump of nuclear wastewater into the Pacific Ocean is wrong, a Pakistani nuclear scientist said.

"Zafar Koreshi, dean of graduate studies at Air University Pakistan, made the remarks in an interview with Xinhua.

"'I think it's a very favorable treatment to Japan by the IAEA,' Koreshi said. 'It ignored the interest of the local people who are affected by this and the regional countries who are going to be affected by this.'

"So it's legitimate for China, South Korea and other regional countries to demand a joint mechanism in order to get their concerns addressed, Koreshi said.

"Koreshi urged Japan to immediately cease this plan and work with neighboring countries to conduct scientific research and simulations to study the potential effects on marine life."

And why might and be pissed off? Might have something to do with rising ocean temperatures (affecting their food sources) and all the CRAP we've been dumping into the world's oceans!

Signs of the human era, from fallout to

AFP, 10/07/2023

Paris (AFP) – As scientists make the case that humans have fundamentally transformed the planet enough to warrant our own geological epoch, another question arises: is there anything left untouched by humanity's presence?

"Soaring gases, ubiquitous microplastics, pervasive "forever chemicals", the global upheaval of animals, even old and chicken bones -- all have been put forward as evidence that the world entered the , or era of humans, in the mid-20th century.

"Jan Zalasiewicz, a British who chaired the Anthropocene Working Group for over a decade, paused for a moment when asked if there was anywhere on Earth that lacked signs of human influence.

"'It's hard to think of a more remote place' than the in , Zalasiewicz told AFP.

"Yet when scientists drilled deep below the glacier's ice a few years ago, they found traces of .

"It was lingering fallout from nuclear weapon tests that began in 1945, leaving behind a presence unlike anything before.

"Zalasiewicz said these radionuclides represented perhaps 'the sharpest signal' to mark the start of the Anthropocene epoch 70 years ago."

is good for you? The fringe viewpoint gains ground in the Trump administration

by Patrick Malone February 27, 2019

"These assertions [of "] stand scientific consensus on its head. Most experts say to the contrary that even low doses of radiation cause cell damage that years later can promote uncontrolled cell growth and replication, and that children and fetuses are particularly susceptible to harm. That seven-decade-old view was reaffirmed as recently as last April [2018] in a study by a congressionally chartered nonprofit organization, the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement.

"The study, overseen by a dozen experts from the government, academia, and industry, and funded by the NRC, considered 29 contemporary scientific studies of the effects of low-dose radiation in reaffirming that even low-level radiation should be avoided to the extent possible.

"'There is clear evidence of excess risks for many cancer types, such as bladder, breast, colon, stomach and lung,' from exposure to excess radiation, the report said. It acknowledged that at lower doses the relationship is less certain, but noted that several long studies of medical outcomes for tuberculosis patients given x-ray imaging known as fluoroscopy collectively showed “a straight-line relationship between breast tissue [radiation] dose and breast cancer, adding substantial weight to the judgment on the use of the [existing] model for radiation protection.'

"It added that 'there was no conclusive evidence' to refute the linear, or direct cause and effect, 'relationship for many of the risks attributable to low-level ionizing radiation' – essentially endorsing the mainstream insistence on low-dose protections as a prudent, cautionary measure. The NRC members will consider the report as they deliberate about the SARI members’ petition, McIntyre said."

From 2014: More Bad News For And

By Andy Tully

"Meanwhile, Bloomberg News calculates that Tepco appears likely to miss a deadline to remove a radioactive isotope linked to leukemia from the water stored at the ruined plant. Tepco President Naomi Hirose had promised Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that all the water would be cleaned by March 31, 2015.

"When a Bloomberg reporter showed a Tepco spokeswoman the new estimate that more time is needed to rid the water of because of equipment delays and a failed effort to stop radioactive contamination of nearby groundwater, Mayumi Yoshida replied that Tepco would do its best to get the job done on time.

"Strontium can enter the food chain by depositing into the bones of fish, and further delays could prolong South Korea’s ban on imports of Japanese seafood."

Dark forces lurking behind dishonest TEPCO

Updated 22:00, 12-Jun-2023

"Tokyo Electric Power Company () announced that facilities used to release the nuclear- wastewater from the Power Plant into the sea will be put into trial operation on Monday, according to local media outlets. The move is widely seen as a pilot for 's formal dumping plan.

"After TEPCO sent seawater into an underwater tunnel designed to dump the nuclear-contaminated water into the last week, the marine caught in the harbor of the plant were found to have 180 times the maximum limit of the element allowed in Japan's food safety law.

"Despite this worrying result, the International Atomic Energy Agency () asserted in a report released on May 31 that TEPCO had demonstrated 'capabilities for accurate and precise measurements of the radionuclides present in the treated water stored on site.' The report concluded that no additional radionuclides at significant levels were detected. The contradicting findings make the public even more concerned about Japan's dumping plan."

"In an interview with Chinese media, , an who has stayed in Japan for almost 30 years, straightforwardly expressed his disagreement with the IAEA's report. TEPCO has only tested 20 percent of the tanks, Burnie said. In addition, third-party laboratories in the U.S., Switzerland and South Korea have taken the samples of only 25-liter water (before dilution) each, while there's more than 1.3 million metric tons of nuclear-contaminated water stored in the plant. The amount of samples was unbelievably limited."

Japanese expert: Filters not sufficient to remove all radioactive elements from wastewater
