@nellie_m @Parents4FutureUK yes, exactly. This has really impacted me. Like, for a few years i was merrily tweeting #NoFlying etc, because i stopped flying, but this year (for many reasons at once) i am flying and i realise i really might as well pack up as the #hypocrisy is so extremely unbearable. I talk a lot IRL about my #Guilt (to people who fly and don’t even think about it), so at least it’s been a good conversation starter. But here i feel i should stop everything
I’m a disorganised person who uses travel agencies because I can’t juggle trip details myself.
I want to get from Northern England to Athens in late October, without flying.
Is there a travel agency that will book this for me? It’s not a holiday, it’s my life.
Train to London
Train to Paris
Train(s)to Bari or Brindisi
Boat to Kerkyra (with a few days’ stop because my mom lives there)
Boat to Patras
Bus to Athens

"European governments lost out on €34.2 billion in revenue last year due to very low levels of taxation in the aviation sector. This €34.2 billion could pay for 1,400 km of high-speed rail infrastructure – equivalent to the distance from Hamburg to Rome." https://www.transportenvironment.org/discover/every-hour-european-governments-lose-out-on-e4-million-in-aviation-taxes/ #noflying
“Sleeping around” has a special meaning on #NightTrains ;) Here’s my cabin for tonight, from Zagreb to Zürich: Window can open! There’s a wash basin! & Clean bed! Electricity to charge my phone! Even some food & drinks! I’m happy & expecting sweet dreams:) 🛌 🚆 😴 #trains #TrainPride #NoFlying #TrainsNotPlanes #selfie #NLNOG

My turn to enter the #noflying for #noflyacademics!
Let me use this opportunity to share some nice pictures 😀
Here is a random landscape from my first train through southern France.
I was not aware, but that coffee was the end of the rail part of this #noflying trip. TER first delayed, then canceled, then 2 buses. Anyway, about to get home soon. End of this🧵!
23/23
I rarely "advertise" places, but for #noflying friends, I here make an exception. The combination of excellent coffee, perfect snacks and extremely nice staff convinces me. This is right across the square in front of Valence Ville station.
22/...
The curious shape of Valence TGV is always intriguing, but I prefer to continue this last bit of a week-long #noflying just a few more kilometers to Valence Ville. The coffee across the street there is definitely better than the standardized stuff here.
21/...
Figuring out that changing to a TGV in Montpellier (still 80 minutes delay) was the necessity on this #noflying trip was again left to my own means (and the #DeutscheBahn app). I knew why I dreaded the encounter with #sncf staff in this particular station (I had bad experience with them before), but on the third attempt I got past them and can now continue my voyage.
19/...
I try not to inflate the negative #noflying experiences, but once again #sncf manages to combine technical failure with misleading and false information. 80 minutes delay from Port Vendres, no acoustic information at the station, and what the app says is both false (no, there is no train in the other direction to wait for) and incomplete (must change train in Perpignan because of technical failure, but they won't tell us through the app). Just why?
18/...
On that perfectly comfortable #noflying TER train (why don't we have those where we live in the Drôme?) arrived Perpignan about an hour and 20 minutes late. Just 332 km today, all fine, despite the hickups.
Still the question though: delays due to technical and human problems may always occur, but what about upgrading the electronic help in such cases? If I can do it myself, then a computer should be able to do it as well.
17/...
Getting off the intercité #noflying in Narbonne, next TER delayed, but the brasserie across the street still open, so who am I to complain.
16/...
Continuing my #noflying trip after two days in Marseille. Technical problems around Nîmes, I can tolerate that, but this time not much useful assistance from #SNCF (although very friendly staff at St Charles tries to help). In the end, I find myself the solution with another delayed train heading the right way. I have no reservation on it, but the staff lets me board anyway.
15/...
Speed is not the most important part of #noflying, but using less than seven hours to go from the northern Brittany coast to the Mediterranean (1186 km), with three trains and two metros through Paris, is quite breathtaking.
14/...
I was 10 minutes late on #noflying arrival in Paris. Out of curiosity, I checked the "rebook on a later train" SMS that #SNCF sent me, in case I might miss the connection. This looks very well done to me, why can #DeutscheBahn not have something like this?
13/...
No photos from the change of TGVs #noflying in Paris. Made it from Montparnasse to Gare de Lyon in 29 minutes, but with a lot of luck and metros 4 and 14. But don't count on this to always work for everyone!
12/...
After a pleasant day at St. Jacut-de-la-mer, discussing scientist engagement with colleagues at DECOD https://www.umr-decod.fr/en (thanks again for the invitation!), I continue #noflying south again. @MathieuDoray
10/...
@PoLaRobs This is hilarious but of course a general problem. I do hope you can persuade whoever pays for this to pay your rail ticket nevertheless (if not: don't go). Are you sure that there are no less expensive rail tickets? And I would argue that those 12 hours can actually be pleasant and partially productive hours, in contrast to all the hanging around in airport security, queuing and cramped-seat hours. You might even sleep or enjoy the landscape. #noflying
