Trying #nomadBSD on a potato desktop assembled with very ancient HW, pretty happy with the outcome.
System has even recognized the old Nvidia GPU and the wireless stick, can't wait to try multi-head configuration and serious customization.

@herrbischoff @thindil Depending on your needs you could use a cheap WI-FI USB dongle, graphics should work without acceleration with the SCFB driver even in case Nvidia does not work (but since there are Nvidia drivers even accelerated graphics might work).

You could try #NomadBSD to see how far you get without having to install something.

Maybe it would be the right time to merge the great work #NomadBSD is doing into the #FreeBSD installer as an „opinionated desktop install“?

I understand that practically everything that is setting #NomadBSD apart from stock #FreeBSD is implemented by installing a set of packages, some configuration and a custom kernel configuration.

There could be more preconfigured setups like this one.

@cynicalsecurity #FreeBSD is my daily driver on my #notebook for some years now and for me it is very stable and exactly what I need. #Ports/#Packages will allow you to easily configure it according to your needs.

If you want to try if it fits your bill, simply look at #NomadBSD first which is a preconfigured #FreeBSD life system running from a stick and then either install that one and see how it works for you or go for a #FreeBSD installation.

Unfortunately the fan is going nuts so I need to figure out how to do whatever #mbpfan does on #linux and do that on #bsd

It's Sunday evening, so why not try and replace #Kubuntu on my 10 year old #iMac with #BSD.. 😁

Giving #NomadBSD a try, seems legit it's based on #FreeBSD I've got a gui, now just need to get WiFi working..

Seems I can install #kde on there if it all works and even #tailscale

All feels very Linux 1998 in so much as, will things work, won't they, I'm not expecting issues with older hardware, but it is a Mac 😁

If I can get the OS working, with tailscale then it's #docker and other tools..

Love the idea, won't boot on my 2012 iMac, however now I'm peaked enough to try #nomadbsd and if that doesn't run #freebsd and #kde

Diese Zeilen schreibe ich bereits von #NomadBSD aus. Ist ja echt Idiotensicher. Vielleicht hatte ich auch einfach nur Glück mit meiner Hardware aber es läuft. Direkt vom USB Stick in die Desktopumgebung gestartet, ein paar Configs geklickt (Sprache, Tastatur, Zeitzone) noch mal Neustart und läuft. 👍

Dann will ich mal das von @coastgnu vorgeschlagene #NomadBSD ausprobieren. Bin gespannt.

Mai provato una BSD in vita mia, sono molto curioso, anche se il primo scoglio l'ho trovato vedendo che per comprimere l'immagine disco hanno usato un formato che non avevo mai sentito: lzma.

je další z #bsd family desktop instalací, je o trochu déle k dispozici než #nomadbsd Nadstavba oken nad touto #freebsd je teď defaultně MATE.
Je stejně plně funkční a použitelná. Za měsíce používání jsem v tom nenarazil na žádný větší problém. V minulosti jsem na tom např. ani za boha nemohl rozjet WiFi, teď už je to o hodně lepší
#freebsd řeší hodně věcí poněkud jinak než #linux není to masovka 🙂🤷‍♂️ a vidět na tom desktop je víc kuriozita než v #linux
