I've Just Worked Out...

When I was driving my medium-sized diesel car, a kWh of diesel (0.093 litres) would get me about 1.4 km down the road.

Now that I drive a similar-sized EV, a kWh gets me about 7 km down the road. That's 5 times further!

Based on this, in our transition from fossil-fuel energy to renewable energy, we only need a small fraction of the energy to be transitioned. The rest (in my example 80%) is not needed.

For a more detailed view of USA Energy Consumption in 2021, look at the chart. Basically, it says what I just said, but their “rejected energy” is 67%.

The World Health Organisation published a report showing that, in 2019, almost all of the global population (99%) breathe air that exceeds WHO guideline limits and contains high levels of pollutants. In the report, outdoor air pollution is estimated to have caused 4.2 million premature deaths worldwide in 2019.
The report attributes almost all of this air polution to the burning of fossil fuels.

Sabotage?

Q: As time runs out and frustration increases, violent actions are likely to increase in scope and intensity. What is your perspective on taking on the dominant regime in an attempt to raise the cost of fossil fuels in that way, including, when is sabotage acceptable?

A: There is not a “no sabotage” route. Business-as-usual is sabotaging the lives and livelihoods of people around the world today. And so, when someone carries out some action against material objects, not against other people, then I think the judgement we have to make is - does that damage - is it justified by the reduction in damage one expects to occur elsewhere by carrying out that action? … If some sabotage can actually slow down the development of a fossil fuel facility, the question we have to ask is, is that slowing it down helping overall to reduce the total amount of damage ... from the impacts of climate change.

On Monday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called upon nations to cease the funding of all new oil and gas discoveries and projects, and stop the expansion of existing oil and gas reserves if the world is to avert a climate catastrophe.

On Wednesday, UK PM Sunak said "I think it's an economically illiterate policy of, I think, almost all oposition parties to prohibit any new exploration of fossil fuels in the North Sea... Its a completely absurd policy".

When the UK government is diametrically opposed to UN policy, which is based on the work of thousands of scientists across 195 member governments, I see two options:
The UK government must change its policy, or
The UK must change its government.
