Round 2: #Poll to name ppl refusing #nonFreeSoftware. Vote for a word that best suits this criteria:
→ What would you want to be called?
→ What word would CNN journalists use?
→ What’s reasonable for folk & reggae lyrics?
Guidelines:
- 1 box if a word is clearly best
- 3 boxes against a word that is clearly the worst
- 2 boxes for ties
- chk comments for better words & reply +1
fossarian¹ → #FOSS —arian
libresarian → Libre Software—arian
fossist → FOSS—ist
libreswist → Libre SoftWare—ist

Imagine you refuse to run #nonFreeSoftware. What would you want to be called?
* “Fossarian” is described here:

Consider this ballot to have a “write in” option (invent a word & put it in a comment). Plz read the thread because you might want to vote on someone else’s nomenclature (reply to them with “+1”).
@Wuzzy Governments are now pushing #nonfreesoftware. This is more of a tyranny than what we see in the private sector b/c you cannot boycott the government. Tax finances gov agencies who then impose nonfree s/w & you are excluded from services you’re entitled to b/c of your lifestyle choice. We need to drive the point that those govs are discriminating against fossarian people.
@Wuzzy I must say when I tried to visit your post in a GUI browser, Fosstodon tried to force me to run #nonfreesoftware by pushing a nonfree JavaScript CAPTCHA. I assume you’re unaware of that because it’s a glaring #hypocrisy on the part of the #Fosstodon admin. Anyway, I appreciate the feedback. Though I’m struggling to envision improvements on the essay from that feedback.

What do you call someone who rejects #nonfreesoftware? “#Fossarian”. https://thefreeworld.noblogs.org/post/2023/04/15/what-do-you-call-people-who-reject-non-free-software/ #FOSS #freesoftware

@skobkin @gitea @codeberg @twann If you have a FOSS project & you force your devs to run #nonfreesoftware, you’re reducing your contributors to those who have no ethical problem w/non-free s/w. OTOH, if the platform is free of nonfree s/w then your project welcomes contributions from both those who care and those who don't. Moreover, it's not just about devs because the bug tracker needs to be fed by all users.
@lord @TheOuterLinux #Libera uses MS for web hosting & they've jailed their web gateway in #cloudflare. #OFTC forces you to solve a Google #reCAPTCHA (thus #nonfreesoftware) to get a cloak -- & some channels (e.g. #gnucash) force you to register before you have a voice. So bad options all around.
#libera #cloudflare #oftc #recaptcha #nonfreesoftware #gnucash
@fsf #FSF's rationale for switching to #Libera.chat ignores FSF's own criteria for the decision & comes down to essentially "As we have had nearly twenty years of positive experiences with the Freenode staff". Yet libera.chat violates FSF's own criteria. web.libera.chat *forces* people to run #nonfreesoftware, & b/c tor users must 1st reg. outside tor, anonymity is not respected.
@danie10
Headline says "#European" when it should really just say "#German".
It's quite the opposite in #Denmark, where you have #RUC pushing #nonfreesoftware onto students. And the students also have little respect for #freesoftware. Not a single student in the college of science & environment uses #linux at that #Danish school.

#MicrosoftPandemic alert!
It seems that #microsoft is convincing schools and universities around Europe to get students and staff addicted to using the #nonfreesoftware #office365 during the #COVID19 (#coronavirus #SARSCov2) pandemic. Please help circulate links that can be used to help try to provide counterarguments to people running our over-centralised, non-transparent-decision-making institutions; such as:

@ajz@social.linux.pizza @ChrisTalleras@mastodon.art @Ayior spot on ChrisTalleras. I'm totally disgusted everytime I hear about a public school using #nonfreesoftware. Why isn't #Gimp viable? And if there's trully a good reason to use Adobe on #Windows, then have you at least tried Adobe on #ReactOS?

@cypnk My bank decided to deny online access to those without mobile phones, & force customers to download #nonfreesoftware from #google playstore. They increase their fees too. https://mamot.fr/@expat/103347423709952582
@NeoTheThird @adfeno There is merit to both making a non-free system more free & making a wholly free system more usable. The former has the problem of supporting #nonfreesoftware indefinitely b/c developers hate to reinvent the wheel- they would rather advance capability. #Replicant avoids that issue. And Replicant /is/ a solution so long as problem doesn't call for mobile phone svc.
@_microbe101 strictly w.r.t #Signal's use of #nonfreesoftware, the app is hardcoded to execute Google's non-free j/s. There are also some non-free libraries that Signal uses but I don't recall which ones. If you're asking for Signal #privacy issues in general, see https://github.com/privacytoolsIO/privacytools.io/issues/779

@Ajz@mastodon.nl @douginamug @sheogorath i've filed an enhancement request and received back an implementation the same day. I couldn't have been more impressed. Compare that with #nonfreesoftware, where there is rarely even a way to report bugs.
@kyle Signal → Jami or Wire (#Signal app is #nonfreesoftware from an org that acts like a profit-driven corp. It subjects users to many forms of #masssurveillance [see https://github.com/privacytoolsIO/privacytools.io/issues/779])

@IzzyOnDroid @strypey @markosaric ty for the clarification. I wonder how to fix this problem w/proprietary apps. I generally take a stand against #nonfreesoftware. But there are some cases where there is great pressure to use an non-free app (e.g. a bank starts denying me access to my money unless I install their app).
@markosaric @strypey If you cover #Playstore alts, then I think @IzzyOnDroid's 3rd party repo may accept #nonfreesoftware, while #Fdroid would be the ideal repo for #freesoftware. Izzy?
