I learned about communication4all.org/ listening to Elizabeth Bonker interviewed on the Uniquely Human podcast today. I love that there is a group focused on raising up non-speakers and challenging the industrial hegemony govused on oppressing them.

Finally finding loads of information, articles, and people to answer questions, on both communication in , and the use of (Augmented and Alternative Communivation) for both speaking and non-speaking adults.

This is making me do lots of happy dances as I can now see this section of my book taking shape ๐ŸŽ‰

About the article in Psychology, that even misuses the word neurodiversity.
As for ? and all the batshit in this article, this people flaging people as idiots, after telling they don't know them.
Am I supposed to say thank you or the F word?

Subject: Non-speaking = trauma

Question 3: only for non-speaking people please โค๏ธ

Has being non-speaking caused you to suffer trauma (also because of context/society/lack of understanding and communication support)?

I really think it would be swell if everybody whoโ€™s outspoken and can manage to do so would advocate for folks.

I also really donโ€™t think that any marginalized group in any domain has the sole responsibility for their cousins who are worse off because the folks who actually are constitutionally responsible donโ€™t give a shit.

Seriously.

So today we purchased our sons AAC device, and cant wait for it to be delivered.

But I also feel somewhat sad, I am lucky to live in a Country where funding is available, the process for funding as usual is not easy with very specific language needed to get funding.

These are life changing equipment for people, which sadly are very expensive pieces of equipment and they should be available for all that need them.

I just hope now that it isnt Australia Post delivering it as I dont want it thrown at the door ๐Ÿ˜‚

I have personally learned so much about people from @ekverstania@twitter.com (also mas.to/@tania), as well as many others on Twitter. I am very grateful about the awareness and education they have provided over the years. It has increased my awareness of issues of access and equity that was previously not on my radar, and made me appreciate the non-speaking people I do meet and interact with even more. Thank you, and I hope to continue my journey and learn even more from this community and its advocates going forward.

I want to give a shout out to all the , , and people, whether or having other disabilities. We live in a society that emphasizes spoken communications, and alternatives like are not always available or offered to people who cannot speak. It is important that we remember and listen to those in the @actuallyautistic and @disability community that cannot (always) communicate verbally. There are alternative forms of communication that are just as valid and need to be respected. Make sure you listen to these members of our community. When possible, promote AAC as and alternative form of communication, especially to those who would write off children or adults who cannot speak verbally.

This weekend I will be attending an online meeting for the second time in my life and with increased availability due to the pandemic I am confident this time will be good. Last time was made impossible for me to attend by ableist attitudes within an autistic research community.

How I helped support my son in learning to type:

We started actively working on learning to type in Sept 2020, and I would say it was around early Nov 2020 that he was able to type obvious answers of 1-2 words. Now he can write a paragraph!
