I have yet to come across a book that can help me understand my 'silent' son. I have a general understanding as my dad was very similar (not diagnosed). Not all autistic people can speak. Not all autistic people have interests.

How can I make a living as a disabled person?

I'm currently only making it on benefits and family support, but I know I need more than what that can offer. I'm nonverbal, can't meet new people or handle responsibility, I can't work under pressure or travel far and my only marketable skill is illustration.

Being a #mute #autistic in a system that isn't mute and only has two members that even go #nonverbal is so awkward.

The sheer number of people who have raised their voices at me because I can't speak is more than I'd like, especially as a protector it makes me feel weak.

I can't learn to speak, my voice doesn't exist and so I use AAC in classes and when talking to friends but some people make me feel so observed. It's an aid, just as a wheelchair is.

I don't say much because I don't have a lot to say. Typically I rehash objective info/quotes I've gathered throughout my life and offer those up when people talk to me. I'm just a bit #NonVerbal but my kitties don't seem to mind.

A friend of mine is teaching a college class and wants to make sure they are engaging and accommodating a mostly nonverbal student.

It's an in-person class, and they don't have access to details about what this means specifically, but wanted to make sure they had someone with personal experience helping them research possible accommodations. They will pay for your time and expertise.

Soooo who knows or thinks they can find resources or information on how to make sure an in-person class is accessible? Please share this for better reach. I would especially love to be able to refer them to someone who is personally nonverbal.
