Today in Labor History September 10, 1963: 20 black children were integrated into Birmingham schools in spite of opposition by the city. Martin Luther King, James Bevel & Fred Shuttlesworth led the campaign of nonviolent direct action to integrate Birmingham, Alabama, one of the most segregated cities in the nation. Over a thousand were arrested during the campaign. Bull Connors ordered the use of high-pressure hoses and attack dogs on juvenile protesters. Racists bombed the Gaston Motel, in a failed attempt to assassinate King.

Harcourd Klinefelter, a #mennonite minister, recalls the "fantastic group of people" around #MLK in his organization and church. "Without the very great commitment and effort of many persons, who were often just so inspiring but who never appeared in the media, the Movement would never have come as far as it did." Harky Klinefelter, who later moved to the Netherlands continued to work as an activist and trainer for #nonviolence and #humanrights in many conflicts.

It does not mean ethusiastically obedying the police, or tripping over yourself to denounce "violent" protestors.

The NGO aka "#nonprofit" industrial complex is just a 'soft power" arm of Americas domestic counter insurgency. Their leaders are career collaborators and snitches. And when they aren't coopting or undermining grassroots movements, smearing radicals, and sowing confusion, they help the super rich launder money and get tax breaks.

Today in Labor History August 4, 1792: Poet Percy Bysshe Shelley was born. He promoted freedom of speech, ending aristocratic and clerical privilege, and equal distribution of income and wealth. He was also a vegetarian, advocate for free love and an atheist, who wrote about the link between organized religion and social repression. His poems and political writings were admired by Marx, Gandhi and others. His poem The Mask of Anarchy (1819) was the first modern work to support nonviolent protest. It was recited by students at the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 and by protesters in Tahrir Square during the Egyptian revolution of 2011. Shelley wrote The Mask of Anarchy following the Peterloo Massacre (8/16/1819), when the British cavalry charged into a crowd of around 60,000 people who had gathered to demand political representation, killing 13. He was married to, Mary Shelley, who wrote Frankenstein.
