My fave season of the year - , when we are far away from being sweaty and overheated.

On that note, it is feeling icy today ๐Ÿฅถ

Tomorrow marks the beginning of the Noongar season, Djeran. Running from April to May, Djeran provides a break from the very warm weather with the change of season bringing cool nights and dewy early mornings.

The winds also change, with light breezes typically swinging from the south
Djeran is the time to look out for red flowers, especially from the red flowering gum (Corymbiaficifolia) and the smaller, petite flowers of the summer flame (Beaufortia aestiva). You may also see red 'rust' and seed cones on sheoaks (Allocasuarina fraseriana). Banksias also start to display their flowers, offering nectar for small mammals and birds

Traditionally, food at this time of year included zamia seeds that had been collected during the previous season, along with root bulbs of the yanget (bulrushes), freshwater fish, frogs and turtles
As the season progresses, nights become cooler and damp. Historically, the onset of cool, rainy days meant traditional mia mias (houses or shelters) were repaired to ensure they were waterproof and ready for the wintery months ahead.

OK, so here is my !

I live in the most isolated capital city in the world, , and therefore on Whadjuk boodja. I pay my respects to the traditional custodians of the land, and their Elders - past, present, and emerging.

I am male (he/him), and married to the amazing artist @leece .

I have been a for most of my professional life, and use Linux or derivatives exclusively at home.

For fun, I play games, and . I also swim as a (well, mer-dude), and ride a three-wheeled human-powered vehicle called a Me-Mover. I have a Hobie Outback pedal-powered kayak, which takes me back to my past as a Sea Scout on the Swan. I enjoy playing with , , , and many, many other things.

I am (and have been all my life) but love making mixed drinks, and have an extensive bar.

I am an amateur without any particular speciality, but I do particularly like taking shots of (especially ), and other mer-folk. I also enjoy shooting B&W, and play with in-camera (about which I have written extensively on my blog) . To round things out, I take quite a few images.

For the past few years, I have been learning Nyoongar (primarily the Marribank Orthography).

Here is a shot of me taken by the amazing @leece on .

Kaya koorda,

On the 26th, which is not a date to celebrate, people in and out of Australia might like to look at and listen to the wonderful languages that resonate in the lands of Australia.

Don't know where to look?
You can find out and listen to them here, with speakers recording the 50 words project here:

50words.online/

More information's available at gambay.com.au/

If there are any other Nyoongar speakers here or other first languages speakers it might be nice to exchange some conversation.

Welcome to Birak - season of the young. This season is represented by the colour red, symbolising heat, sun and fire. Over December and January, rain eases up and warm weather sets in. Afternoons are cooled by sea breezes, meaning this was traditionally the burning time of the year. The country would be burned in mosaic patterns, increasing grazing pastures for animals, helping seed germination and making it easier to move across the country. This season also sees some babies venturing out of their nests, while reptiles shed their old skin for new. With rising temperatures, baby frogs also complete their transformation into adulthood. What happened to the word "Dardy"? Used to be very common amongst students, but hardly hear it any more.
Was it a Noongar word? Or just a teen word?
Also, is Noongar preferred, or , or something else?

post time?
This is going to be a bit like my bio: I don't want to be identifiable, due to my job as a teacher in a country town.
I'm in and technology, teaching high school students.
I'm very interested in and
I think people are fantastic, and the worst.
I love nature, flowers, orchids and spotting the rare things out in the bush.
And contrary to people's beliefs... has very few "dangerous" spiders. Western Australia has only one: the redback (VERY similar to the black widow).
The Sydney Funnel-Web is pretty scary though! That thing is deadly!
No, we don't ride kangaroos to school, though a kangaroo did invade my school's athletics carnival and won the 200m sprint.
I love life, and don't miss the city at all.
I live and work on land in the nation. I work with lots of indigenous children and colleagues.

In language class and the teacher has lost interest. She seems tired. Problem with learning a language with very few "native" speakers and even less day-to-day usage is real.

I will persevere but the frustration is real.
