'Cara' or 'Djubak' are the Noongar names for Donkey Orchid. Cara were an important source of food for Indigenous people. They were eaten either raw or roasted in hot ashes. The tubers are reportedly high in starch, juicy, and taste like potatoes. The flowers appear in spring (late Djilba to Kambarang).

I learnt this from 'Noongar Bush Tucker' by Vivienne Hansen and John Horsfall. Vivienne is a Balladong Wadjuk Yorga from Bibbulmun Nation or Noongar people of south west western australia. Highly recommend you buy this book. Support Indigenous knowledge and writing.

Can you spot the Karda (lizard)? Came across this guy in the summer, and we both got a big fright. He ran straight up the tree as quick as I could blink and waited 40 minutes after I left to come down. He was two to three foot long. Probably just sunning himself when I rudely interrupted.

My grandfather always warned me not to corner a Karda, because it'll climb you just like a tree and those claws are very serious. I'd never seen one climb before. After seeing it with my own eyes, I absolutely will double heed my pops advice.

Karda is the Noongar word for Goanna/lizard. They are amazing creatures. Please drive carefully in warm months because these guys are frequently hit.

The poem "Gino's" from Jack Davis' poetry anthology "Black Life"

Incredible that Jack Davis wrote this over 30 years ago in 1992. This sounds like Freo right now! Except there's no more Hungry Jacks and the last time I visited Timezone Freo, it was kinda sad. It reminded me of the subreddit Liminal Space. But otherwise, sounds like it hasn't changed all that much.

Last night, I went for a long random walk to clear my head and surprised myself by how quickly I got to the Derbal Yerigan/Swan River. It only took about 25 mins to get from my place to Adachi Park, a riverside park. Belmont's slice of the riverside is pretty decent, I just never really appreciated it. 😓❤️

Along the way, I went through Severin Walk. It's pretty much a secret garden. The entrance is a narrow pathway flanked by two warehouses, you'd easily miss it if not paying attention. It then opens up into a nature area with a creek running through it. It's got all these weird branching pathways and staircases that link up to the surrounding warehouses and businesses. There are some outdoor seating areas to the side of the path. I really think it's a nice little walk with some potential. If the council could sort out the creek that smells like a backed up toilet, it would improve the walk experience immeasurably. I didn't take pictures of Severin Walk, I was thinking next time I go through, I might record a video. Photos don't quite do it justice.😝

(Just a quick character design I came up with yesterday. Not sure what I'm going to do with him but I like his look.)

QOMO Character Biography

Qomo was a former Abbot at the Shaolin Monastery. At the age of 250 , he decided to return to his home planet, Xichũqaratam to live out his remaining years.

When he is not teaching Shaolin Kung Fu to the locals of his home village or meditating, he can be found translating Chan (Zen) Buddhist texts to his native Puriqāsh
language as well as tending to his garden.

Qomo's garden, renowned for it's beauty, draws visitors from all over the local sector. It has unique plants that can be found nowhere else in the galaxy besides Nyoongar Boodja, a place on Earth that Qomo was enamoured with in his youth.

He had spent his 50s and 60s, living in Nyoongar Boodja learning it's language, culture and martial arts. However for mysterious reasons, he left Nyoongar Boodja abruptly, relocated to the Shaolin Monastery and devoted himself to it.

Back at Point Peron again. Attempted some shots with the night sky, which is beautiful down here tonight, using my phone. I could see so many stars that I couldn't normally see in Belmont with all the light pollution.

Tried cooking kangaroo tail for the first time yesterday. Kept it simple, did a 4 hour slow soy braise and served it with white rice. Delicious stuff. The sauce was sweet and savoury with a hint of Chinese five spice. The meat was juicy, tender and fall off the bone. I'll definitely do this again! 😊
