I’m currently playing the demo of game called #Norco. It’s supposed to be this Southern gothic cyberpunk story, so I figured I’d give it a whirl. My character just walked into a warehouse and was confronted with…this.

I am, quite vocally, not a fan of pixel art games. As I'm reasonably certain I've said before, I lived through pixel art when it was a necessity, and I have no nostalgic sentimentality towards that era that makes me look back wistfully to a more "simple" time.

Which is why, upon starting Norco, I sighed. It was immediately obvious that I'd overlooked the fact it was a pixel art game when I bought it, and I figured I'd just suffer through it for 15 minutes and get it out of the way.

I was wrong.

Norco is a point-and-click adventure, set in and around a suburb of New Orleans, some time in a run-down future.

The soundtrack is moody & evocative, and the storyline drew me in. The only reason I didn't keep playing is that I'm somewhere south of exhausted and desperately need some sleep.

Far from my initial impression, Norco is:

Finally had a chance to pick up Norco, the art is absolutely beautiful. I'd describe the tone as Southern dystopia, it made me nostalgic for somewhere I haven't been.

And that's #Norco put away. You know... for all its mucky ugliness and intentional jank, I think this one appealed to me more than slow, majestic #Pentiment. I liked the swampy weirdness, haunted by alligators whose pebbled skin glistened with rainbows of aerosolized petroleum, while their eyes shone with the fires of refinery plumes.

Also it's one-third as long, so, yes.

This is a great time for #AdventureGames! And I need to take a break from them for a bit. 📚

Started playing #Norco based only on enthusiastic recommendations.

Within the first minutes, I played a staring-contest minigame with a monkey plush toy, and didn't realize that was the combat tutorial until I found myself using the same skills to fight a dude outside a gas station. Then the same play-mechanic appeared again when I wanted to pet an ornery bookstore cat.

I am going to enjoy this one.

As for the game itself, not sure I really liked it. I respect it from an artistic point, it looks great most of the time, and it surely knows what kind of story it wants to tell. But it doesn't leave a lot of to reason about and I didn't get much joy in actually playing it. It's very, very dark and has fairly little room for things like hope or joy.

Played through #Norco this weekend, a point and click adventure game on the Xbox. I’m not much of a gamer, prefer repetitive games like WoW, Peggle, Pocket Card Jockey etc. Never thought I’d have the patience for an adventure game, but the story was so weird and compelling that I couldn’t put it down. Can recommend!

Fini #Norco, excellent. Il y a un peu de Kentucky Route Zero dans l'ambition littéraire. Visuellement, le pixel art est souvent somptueux. Un peu trop classique dans ses systèmes peut-être, comparé à Citizen Sleeper, joué juste avant, qui réussissait quelque-chose de nouveau.

I could totally see Norco in my GOTY, maybe at #2 behind Golden Idol, but it's too fresh, I need time to process what I played.

I finished Norco.
I had questions.

I read the dev itch 'secret' file.
Still had questions.

Then I read a piece about the game on Wired and finally accepted that I will be left with questions.

The sense of place is laudable, the game greatest achievement. But ironically as a fan of weird I would have preferred a simple modern urban straighter fiction. It's the characters that carry the game, not the weird.
And I hate that Pawpaw may be partly legit according to the dev.
