NORTHERN EXPOSURE: "Cicely" - 5/18/1992 - CBS

This quirky dramedy series was set in the fictional town of Cicely, Alaska, in the 1990s.

After years of remarks about the lesbian couple who supposedly founded the town around the year 1900, we finally got this much-lauded flashback episode about Cicely and her partner Roslyn and how they transformed a violent settlement into an artists' colony.

The script was notable as a gauzy same-sex love story (though a tragic one) at a time when same-sex love stories seldom reached American TV, and the episode was unusual in acknowledging that same-sex couples existed before the 1960s. The general rule for scripted TV back then was to treat queer people as a recent invention, a sort of "fad" that existed neither in the past nor the future.
