This intergrade male #NorthernFlicker has been around for several weeks and posed outside my window today. He shows a black mustache, indicative of some eastern Yellow-shafted ancestry, unlike most male flickers here which have a red mark. Flickers are more terrestrial than other woodpeckers - the wood chiseling bill is multi-purpose, and also works well for hacking hard earth in pursuit of ants!

White dogwood berries are ripened and three very conversational flickers have been snacking all afternoon. Male and female Red-shafted, plus an interesting intergrade male. I see intergrades fairly often but usually it's a touch of red at the nape or wingshafts more orange than salmon - this one had plumage entirely like Red-shafted except his mustache was solid black rather than red. Almost startling to see, underlining his inquisitive glance. #NorthernFlicker #Birding #Oregon

My apple tree was graced with the presence of a pair of Northern Flickers this morning (only one in the photo).
I'm choosing to take it as a sign that today will be a good day.
Given I woke up early this morning with a migraine, though, there's lots of room for it to get better from there.

Last weekend, went walking along Trout Creek in South Lake Tahoe to show off this meadow to some family members who hadn't been birding before. Saw quite a number of different birds, I marked 12 species on my eBird checklist. Stupid me had left my camera behind, so I was left with just the binoculars. Luckily, the others brought their camera.
There were two standout moments. The first was when I saw a Northern Flicker land right in front of us. My stepdad's brother got the picture of the baby poking out of the hole. Then, as we were returning to the trailhead, I saw a large bird land. I knew it wasn't anything familiar so I begged the guy with the camera to get a picture quickly. Lifer for me, a Clark's Nutcracker!

Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus)
I took this in the winter when I used to occasionally see one. don't think there are any of these around here anymore, they've likely moved north.

It's no surprise that real estate in Central Park is highly desirable--and a Northern Flicker and a European Starling were fighting over a beautiful pied-a-terre near the Pool! I love capturing Northern Flickers in flight.❤️💛❤️#birdcpp #NorthernFlicker
Backyard birding and caught this pretty red-shafted Northern Flicker hanging out at the suet.

One of these days the city is going to remove this pole, but for now I’m going to happily watch the flickers vying for territory. #birding #birdstodon #birds #woodpecker #flicker #olywa #pnw #urbannature #cascadia #fensterfreitag #WindowFriday #northernflicker #Colaptesauratus

I wish upon ...
This is a northern flicker. It's an odd photo in that the bird has its eye closed and togue sticking out as if savoring something or making a wish. Who doesn't do that? 🤣
"Northern flickers are diurnal birds. They usually forage on the ground alone, in pairs or in small groups. They may even forage with other birds such as sparrows and blackbirds. Northern flickers feed by probing with their beak and sometimes may catch insects in flight. These birds have an undulating flight; the repeated cycle of a quick succession of flaps followed by a pause creates an effect comparable to a roller coaster. The call of Northern flickers is a loud sustained laugh, ki ki ki ki. These birds can often be heard by a constant knocking as they often drum on trees or even metal objects to declare territory. Like most woodpeckers, Northern flickers drum on objects as a form of communication and territory defense." - animalia.bio

Just checking in.
My friend, the northern flicker, came by again yesterday, same tree and possibly the same branch. This time I watched him fly from the forest to the tree behind my wife's quilting shop. He stayed a while then flew back into the forest. Honestly, I thought he was probably a red bellied woodpecker, so I didn't get up out of my chair to get closer. But remember, it was Mistake Monday. 😂
"The Northern Flicker is one of the few North American woodpeckers that is strongly migratory. Flickers in the northern parts of their range move south for the winter, although a few individuals often stay rather far north." - allaboutbirds.org

Northern Flickers have evaded my best efforts to photograph them. So this photo from today at a Northern California refuge will do for now. #Birds #NorthernFlicker
Don't look at me ...
This northern flicker was in the tree behind my wife's shop yesterday afternoon. The tree overlooks my backyard, so I suspect the bird was checking things out. Earlier, I set out a few peanuts to see what they might attract. Charlie and I were sitting outside, and the bird eventually left. On a side note, the peanuts stayed untouched for the rest of the afternoon, except for a couple that fell to the ground. The peanuts are still there this morning.
"Like most woodpeckers, Northern Flickers drum on objects as a form of communication and territory defense. In such cases, the object is to make as loud a noise as possible, and that’s why woodpeckers sometimes drum on metal objects. One Northern Flicker in Wyoming could be heard drumming on an abandoned tractor from a half-mile away." - allaboutbirds.org

Northern Flicker.
Charlie and I were outside photographing birds in the backyard. I noticed a bird at the top of a tree, just inside the forest beyond my yard. Initially, I though it might be a pileated woodpecker. But after examining the photos realized it was a northern flicker. I was about 75-100 yards away and it was very cloudy. But all in all, I'm satisfied.
"Northern Flickers are large, brown woodpeckers with a gentle expression and handsome black-scalloped plumage. On walks, don’t be surprised if you scare one up from the ground. It’s not where you’d expect to find a woodpecker, but flickers eat mainly ants and beetles, digging for them with their unusual, slightly curved bill. When they fly you’ll see a flash of color in the wings – yellow if you’re in the East, red if you’re in the West – and a bright white flash on the rump." allaboutbirds.org

A male and female northern flicker have been hanging around my feeders all morning. It will be a great day!

I just spotted my first ever #NorthernFlicker. It came to our bird feeder but was unfortunately too heavy so the weight sensitive squirrel deterrent closed the food tray.
Anyway, very well might be my new favorite bird. What a beauty! The brilliant yellow under its wing was 🤩

NORTHERN FLICKER
It's been awhile since I've posted any bird pictures as part of this blog's "other things up in the air".
We have a pair of Northern flickers that love our 'upside down' suet feeders. In recent months, they're feasting almost every morning after 8 AM.

Northern Flicker
I ran into this bird about a week ago. All I saw was a shape moving up a tree. I didn't know what it was until I look at the photos.
"Although it can climb up the trunks of trees and hammer on wood like other woodpeckers, the Northern Flicker prefers to find food on the ground. Ants are its main food, and the flicker digs in the dirt to find them. It uses its long, barbed tongue to lap up the ants." - allaboutbirds.org
