It's 70 years since the devastating #NorthSeaFloods of 1953. Their impact in the Netherlands + Belgium is pretty well known, but I'm often surprised how little people in the UK are aware of the history.
Around 500 people in total lost their lives, including 300 on land in England when #CanveyIsland was flooded. The rest were lost at sea from ferry + fishing boats.

As a result the #ThamesBarrage + #HumberBarrage were built.

This link shared by @whoebert is a really good summary of the threat of #SeaLevelRise in the #Netherlands and how the #Deltaworks have been keeping the country dry for 65 years. The coming week is the 70th anniversary of the #NorthSeaFloods that also affected #EastAnglia very badly.

The Delta Commission say they can adjust for up to 2m #SLR , so we have time, but probably by the middle of this century there will need to be some hard decisions.
