I just chopped a novelette down from 10,200 words to 7500 words, and ouch... that's really difficult without losing the voice and feel of a story. I think I mostly managed it, though. 7500 words opens up a slew of other markets I can submit to.

But I also kept the previous version for the rare market that takes novelettes that I haven't submitted to yet, but isn't currently open. I still like the longer version a little better.
