I know #LydiaLunch was part of the #NoWave scene, and not strictly #PunkRock

But The Harry Crews are one of my favourite bands. They only did one album of live recordings, with songs inspired by novels by Harry Crews.

This is Gospel Singer, which has one of the greatest basslines ever. I don't know how #KimGordon got the bass to sound like that.

“A Wicked Good Time” is a compilation of Boston area bands put together by Modern Methods Records

The album starts with an edgy power pop band called ‘Pastiche’ who only ever released a few singles.

Lots of other cool tracks by bands that went nowhere. Mostly power pop bands, but we also get two tracks from Boston's legendary punks ‘La Peste’. Their song "Lease on Life" sounds like a remake of Agent Orange's "Bloodstains." And the B side includes some more avant garde and no-wave style bands.

But the real gem imho is the band ‘Young Snakes’, featuring Aimee Mann on lead vocals and bass guitar. Their song, "Brains and Eggs”, sounds a bit like the modern band Lithics. It’s a great song. Too bad they never got around to releasing a full album.

Y-Pants - “Off The Hook” (1980)

No Wave trio from NYC active from 1979 - 1982. The band was made up of a photographer, a visual artist, and a filmmaker, skills they leveraged to develop a unique sound using toy instruments (piano, ukulele, paper drums). A cute, lo-fi sound that’s instantly familiar.

They have some great tracks, like their feminist remake of the 1964 Lesley Gore song “That’s The Way Boys Are”. But for me, their best and most on-brand song is this one 👇

The band Gray

What’s a vowel among friends? Surely not worth missing out on #JeanMichelBasquiat, the evanescent artist from the downtown NYC scene that bristled with all manner of visual and #PerformanceArt.

In 1979 #Basquiat, with artist #MichaelHolman, founded Gray, named for Gray’s Anatomy, the classic reference tome that provided inspiration for many of his paintings. In keeping with the ethos of the time, they were unskilled as musicians; this didn’t stop them from playing live around the #NewYork #NoWave scene.

While they never released any recordings during Basquiat’s life, their music was included in the soundtrack to the film "Downtown 81" filmed in 1980-81 but only released in 2001. Surviving members of Gray reunited in 2010 releasing the album “Shades Of…” with music tracks, some from the band’s original incarnation, interspersed with excerpts from Basquiat's enacted calls to a suicide hotline.

Lithics - Edible Door (2018)

I really enjoyed their first album and would recommend it frequently. But this follow up album was even better, by a lot! So many amazing tracks. It’s got such a great blend of old school post-punk and contemporary indie rock.
