Good news! Minnesota just joined the (National Popular Vote Interstate Compact) which aims to bypass the outdated system in the U.S. and ensure that the winner of POTUS elections is the candidate that gets majority of the nationwide popular vote instead of electoral votes. Minnesota is now in a group with 15 other states and D.C. all contributing 205, or ~76%, of the 270 votes needed for the compact to take effect.

See also Duverger's Law: that in first-past-the-post districts (like the US under ), you're likely to get a two-party system.

Not that you can't have third-party "spoilers" under such a system. Just that they're operating at a disadvantage.

In The Hill, Andy Schatz worries that if the US president were elected by popular vote (), third- and fourth-party candidates could spoil the election, allowing the winner to be elected with only 30% of the vote.
AFAIK, this doesn't routinely happen in gubernatorial elections, so I see no reason why it should routinely happen in presidential ones.

@velshi EXCELLENT deep dive into the Electoral College today. Thank you for getting out there. Its a bandaid tho. There’s a better solution to ensure the EC always matches the popular vote also w/out Const’l amendment. The greatest theft of the will of the people is not required under EC. Its States who decide to antidemocratically award electors by winner-take-all. How can EC match popular vote when electors arent even awarded in proportion to the state vote???

Rep. Raskin (D-MD) says the Electoral College needs to go.

And he points out to us that the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is the easiest, best way to kick it to the curb.

If your State isn't yet part of this compact, get in touch with your representatives and let them know about it.

@voice_of_reason Amen. I know all about and promoted it heavily on the Bird to little avail. So close to passage, I still have hopes there’s movement in the background by ‘24. The SC decision in Moore could one day derail it anyway. Regardless, there should always be noise about winner take all until theres political momentum or a court decision to change that.
