After a lot of overthinking (my specialty...), I settled on this setup for the #oldcomputerchallenge ... My regular laptop (a 2014 macbook air running essentially arch Linux) slowed down to one core and 512mb ram with the #NsCDE desktop for the retro feel, and music out of either a #discman or an #iPod 4th gen 😎

I really missed this desktop look.. Brings me back to my SUN days... and AIX.. and...
Ever since I first saw screenshots of #nsCDE, I’ve been fighting the urge to install #Linux on my laptop. https://github.com/NsCDE/NsCDE
I’m feeling the pull. Time to revisit #Gentoo after 20 years and see what’s different (last ran it on dual Celeron 533 CPUs on an Abit BP6 in 2003 before moving to Budapest).
And with all of the #CDE I’ve seen around for the last few months, time to give #NsCDE a whirl (CDE on #HPUX 10.20 was my first taste of CDE, and it has stayed with me all these years).
Combine the two? You bet!

One of the aspects that first attracted me to Linux was the choice in desktop environments. What I specifically thought was great when I made the switch to Linux from Windows was the KDE option at the time. I could shape and mold it to what I wanted my desktop to be, something I had never experienced quite like that

@g3rn0ti It's not actually anywhere near as impressive. It's #NsCDE, a desktop environment based on FVWM that is built to imitate CDE in both form and function.
Positive: It works by default for all GTK2+3 and Qt programs and has many modern quality of life features.
Negative: It's not quite as cool as a real CDE desktop using Motif. :P
