“The Sipekne'katik First Nation does not accept federal government authority to regulate the treaty right to fish for a moderate living. The treaty right was affirmed by the Supreme Court of Canada, which also gave final responsibility to the minister of Fisheries and Oceans to manage fish stocks.”

“Currently, construction of expensive housing developments on sites that were once affordable apartments in the North End is pushing residents out of the city in search of affordable housing, far from their roots and their established communities. This more recent wave of gentrification has been referred to as “Africville 2.0.””

“we’re left with two ruling parties — both of which are led by real estate investors — that are completely bereft of ideas or even any interest in grappling with the need for non-market solutions to the housing crisis. In the meantime, silly debates about whether or not to impose a cap on international students helps both parties to avoid having these conversations.”

“Fighting climate change can no longer be an empty campaign slogan for political parties—the era of talk without action needs to come to an end. There is no longer room for governments to toy with soft ideas to fight climate change. We must act now, and we must be ambitious.”

This is why so many people don’t want to vote. The first-past-the-post voting system destroys the civic will to participate, by design. And that ends up favouring economic elites at the expense of workers. Never forget that those who founded the Canadian state didn’t actually want this country to be a democracy. It was always meant to be an oligarchy propped up by votes from a dominant bloc of conservative, land-owning gentry.

I find this letter rather curious. It mentions criminal poaching but makes no reference to who the perpetrators are. In the letter there is a brief allusion to “ceremonial” harvest… are they referring to Mi’kmaw harvesters as poachers? If they are this is a pretty aggressive attack on a treaty-protected harvest that is only going to spark more conflict.

To be really honest; sure, it’s a good turnout historically . But it’s still woefully low and speaks to the democratic deficit in Canada and Nova Scotia. If only elderly are voting, it’s not really a democracy. It’s a gerontocracy.
“59.1 per cent of eligible voters participated. … during Nova Scotia’s October 2020 municipal elections, had a participation rate of 64.1 per cent, or 1,243 people.”

So many social, infrastructure, and ecological problems in Nova Scotia are caused by the fact that our power grid is operated by a private monopoly. Why do we tolerate public utilities to be operated by oligarchs? It doesn’t even save the province money.
