Probably not as cheap as the cheapest budget airfare, but by the time you factor in hotels and transport to/from airport it's competitive, and definitely cheaper than the peak demand flights.
Apparently ridership on the XPT services has been climbing steeply for a few years now, but there seems to be zero political will from #NSWgov to keep a sleeper service :( Really backwards thinking.

I wrote to Jamie Parker (Greens Member for Balmain (State Gov)) and he assured me that Bill's disagreement with the proposal was that extended widening of the footpath would "reduce space available for existing cyclists and would also mitigate opportunities for dedicated cycleways in the future." (info shared with permission).
Jamie said he knew that the project would get support to proceed (as the required majority supported it) but still felt he needed to make a clear statement about cycling issues if they arise on the agenda in future.
He emphasized his representatives on the various committees he has a vote on are always focused on minimising car use, prioritising pedestrian and bike movements, with an objective to maximise active transport opportunities where ever they arise.
I'm appreciative of their quick and candid response! It's frustrating this context is not accessible from the meeting minutes.
