Perusing the ABC's election primer website for the NSW state election this Saturday in the seat of Newcastle.

The "eminent citizens" have been trying to run (and frequently ruin) this little coal town and former steel city since 1899.

This little gem of history was part of the seat's recent history...

"The ICAC inquiry into illegal developer donations discovered a string of underhand donations to both major parties. McKay (Labor) discovered in the witness box that her party colleagues Joe Tripodi and Eric Roozendaal had been working with Nathan Tinkler (local coal billionaire) to defeat her for failing to back his coal loader proposal. Owen (Liberal) was revealed to have received donations from developer and later Newcastle Lord Mayor Jeff McCloy. Owen was also revealed as having lied to the ICAC over his knowledge of the donations."
