Strike and picket at RMIT tomorrow. City and Bundoora campuses. I hope a lot of people join in to help!
(And I hope security are supportive, although with the rate they took down our posters today, I doubt it).

I've put this off embarassingly long, but have finally joined my #union . https://www.nteu.au #NTEU
Here's all the #Deakin #NTEU #Strike stuff I was in. Thank you to everyone who asked for my opinion on this!
I did a 3-minute video explaining why I was taking strike action here: https://youtu.be/jIBunuMifnk
I was in the Geelong Advertiser talking about how Deakin treats it staff: https://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au/geelong-education/deakin-university-staff-go-on-24hour-nteubacked-strike-over-enterprise-agreement/news-story/4f3c33c76e59887a2c378748e3f80ba5
That is paywalled so the parts of the article involving me are attached (with alt-text).
I was on @3CRMelbourne's @slacker_radio talking with @ULTROS_PROFESSIONAL and @beef_skeleton about Deakin, their treatment of staff, and why we were striking. That starts from about 10 minutes here: https://omny.fm/shows/the-suwa-show-squatters-and-unwaged-workers/the-suwa-show-squatters-and-unwaged-workers-21-jul
This morning I recorded a video giving the reason I'm going on #strike at #Deakin with the #NTEU tomorrow. This arvo I did an interview with the Geelong Addy. Tomorrow I speak at the rally. You're going to be seeing quite a bit of me if you follow the strike tomorrow.
There are a lot of casual staff that are striking with us and not getting paid what they would be (none of us are, but they're in an even worse position!). Please donate to the strike fund to help them recoup their lost wages!

here's the video where I explain why I'm striking tomorrow:
The NTEU are urging the Minister for Education and Chair of the Aus tralian Universities Accord Panel to include some good stuff in the Higher Education Review.
Sign the letter of support here if that's the kind of thing you're into. https://www.nteu.au/News_Articles/National/Higher_Ed_Review_Pledge.aspx - anyone can sign, you don't need to be an NTEU member or an academic.

Alex Zelinsky, the vice-chancellor of the University of Newcastle, gave himself a $70,000 pay rise to $940,000 last year after leading his university to (a) a $38 million deficit, (b) $6.2million in wage theft, and (c) real wage cuts for casual academics.
Senator Tony Sheldon describes Zelinksy's pay rise as "outrageous...disgusting...pitiful...and an indictment of the university sector."

Our strike action today has been written up in The Age! And our awesome library workers banner became the feature image of the article!
"Staff at five universities strike in fight to end reliance on casual labour."

Happy to strike today with uni staff #nteu colleagues across Australia today. Uni staff deserve secure work.

Today I am joining colleagues in industrial action to achieve fair working conditions at the University of Melbourne, including:
⦁ an 80% secure work target
⦁ safer workloads
⦁ restrictions on rolling restructures
⦁ improved parental leave
⦁ fair pay
The 2018 EBA expired in 2021 and the #NTEU presented the University with a log of claims eight months ago. Since then, University management has continually stalled negotiations.
It's for this reason that #UniMelbStrikes ✊
I'm looking forward to joining university colleagues in the NTEU (National Tertiary Education Union) in strike action on Wednesday.
During the four-hour strike we'll be meeting on campus and walking down to Trades Hall, where we'll join folks from other universities in calling for fair pay, safe workloads, and secure jobs.

Today I'm taking strike action at #Deakin University. Deakin's offered sub-standard EA, which voting opens up for today, is an insult to staff, and shows how poorly they understand what is happening at Deakin.
For more information, see these:
https://www.nteu-deakin.org/why-vote-no/
https://www.nteu-deakin.org/how-much-worse-off-will-you-be-on-deakins-agreement/
I also wrote a blog post about how Deakin keeps crying poor while making profits and using that as an excuse to destroy the staff and culture at the university. No more.
https://blog.joyrex.net/vote-no-to-deakins-dodgy-deal
If you're at #Deakin, I highly encourage you to vote NO on their shitty offer. Deakin has ruined us for too long while making profits. The scales need to be balanced.

Hey #NUS and #NTEU , this is your time to shine. Any University Students reading this, do us a proud one and throw a wrench into this stupid thing. If I can lock down a Uni Admin building for 40 days with a sit-in (Murdoch Uni, Late 90s or early 2000s, cant remember) , so can you.
"Catriona Jackson, the chief executive of Universities Australia, is expected to use a series of meetings in Washington DC this week to explore “how Australia’s universities can support the delivery of Aukus”.
Universities Australia said Jackson was due to meet with national security officials from the US Department of State and representatives from the National Science Foundation. The schedule also included meetings with university sector leaders “to discuss research and national security partnerships”."

There is power in the union - Billy Bragg was busy providing some sound and noise for my union, the NTEU, at a picket line in WA. https://fb.watch/jJ6ZEBLCVT/ #education #power #union #BillyBragg #NTEU

Management decided to start a Team and invite a few hundred workers to it. This lead to....
I've posted a blog entry about voting YES on the PABO at Deakin. It goes over how badly Deakin has treated the staff, as well as why NTEU members should authorise every type of industrial action in the vote.
