> Even without nuclear weapons explosions and reactor accidents, people around the world are exposed to radioactive materials—from reprocessing plants. These facilities chemically process the irradiated spent fuel from nuclear power plants, while also producing very large volumes of liquid and gaseous radioactive effluents. These effluents are released into the air; exposure to these constitutes the largest component...

> The government is trying to promote the “reuse” of contaminated soil, generated from decontamination work, in public works projects if the soil contains cesium-134 and 137 at levels below 8,000 becquerels/kg. However, this is 80 times the clearance level... for not requiring management as radioactive materials. It must also be noted that the government has a policy of not measuring radioactive materials other than cesium.

> There is great controversy about the proposed discharge of “ALPS-treated contaminated water” and contaminated soil generated by the decontamination process. Both of these issues show the scale of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident and the complexity of the problem.

The most polluted place in the United States is one most people don’t even know. Learn about Hanford Nuclear Site, home to 56 million gallons of nuclear waste, in this interview by Revelator News with joshua Frank, author of ATOMIC DAYS.
The facility produced plutonium for Fat Man, the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki during WW2 & it continued producing plutonium for weapons for decades after the war.
