So glad my friends incidentally told me yesterday about this alert drill at 3pm today! Without that knowledge I would have been completely panicked especially as the sound my phone emitted was completley alien! I was home but it must have been so much fun in a public place, carnage 😂!

Online book talk tomorrow from University of :

In the fall of 1961, President Kennedy somberly warned Americans about deadly radioactive fallout clouds extending hundreds of miles from H‑bomb detonations, yet he approved ninety‑six US nuclear weapon tests for 1962. Since the attacks on & there have been over 2,000 nuclear tests; we envision the Cold War as a period in which nuclear weapons were not used when in fact statistically there was a nuclear detonation every 8.6 days between 1950-1989. Millions of people lived downwind from those nuclear tests, and tests raised radioactive fallout into the troposphere and stratosphere which eventuated in global distribution of radionuclides. Millions more lived near nuclear production sites, or accident sites like and . These are the “global .”

Radiological contamination in the Bay Area

"Fresh concerns raised about the cleanup of Hunters Point Shipyard"

"On Thursday, Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, a Bay Area-based nonprofit, filed a complaint to the Navy’s Inspector General demanding an investigation of the Navy’s analysis of waste found at the site. PEER contends the Navy has consistently downplayed the risks posed by its findings and misled the public about potential harms.

The shipyard, a 900-acre Superfund site that once hosted a defense laboratory, has come under increasing scrutiny after the Navy reported that it found radioactive material on one of the parcels last October, with 10% of samples testing above EPA-approved screening levels. The material, Strontium-90, is a radioactive isotope that causes cancer and other health hazards."

"Groundwater carries radiation risk for North Korean cities near nuke test site - rights group"

"Tens of thousands of North Koreans and people in South Korea, Japan and China could be exposed to radioactive materials spread through groundwater from an underground nuclear test site, a Seoul-based human rights group said in a report on Tuesday.

North Korea secretly conducted six tests of nuclear weapons at the Punggye-ri site in the mountainous North Hamgyong Province between 2006 and 2017, according to the U.S. and South Korean governments.

The study by the Transitional Justice Working Group said radioactive materials could have spread across eight cities and counties near the site, where more than 1 million North Koreans live, and where groundwater is used in everyday lives including drinking."

Fallout clouds from nuclear weapon tests have caused sickness, mortality, forced displacement, contamination of food and more. When is a "test" actually an "attack"?
