"Eight decades after Mallinckrodt Chemical Works first began the dangerous task of processing uranium at a sprawling complex near downtown St. Louis, the federal government is still removing soil from a creek and cleaning up a landfill — nuclear contamination sites. Last year, a grade school closed amid worries that contamination from the creek got onto the playground and inside the building."

A few things to unpack: " a sense that the South is a growing global power that should be among the nuclear-armed states."
This presumes nuclear weapons are a political status indicator rather than WMDs. You just get them when you are important enough.
Next, why can South Korea build nuclear weapons quickly? Because it has been stockpiling plutonium that it has been manufacturing by operating nuclear power plants for electricity. #Japan is in the same position.
Nuclear power & nuclear weapons are linked. Nuclear reactors were invented in the Manhattan Project for this exact purpose: to manufacture plutonium. Many countries stockpile PU in case they "need" it militarily later.

"Two meetings on nuclear waste were held in New Mexico this week, on different sides of the state with very different reactions from attendees.
On Tuesday, a townhall-style meeting was held in Santa Fe which more than 300 persons attended and about 200 participated online.
Most expressed fears and concerns that a federal plan to transport surplus #plutonium to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad would endanger local communities along the transportation routes.
The next night at a meeting at the city golf course in #Carlsbad, about 30 business leaders, elected officials and invited guests took a much warmer tone with the federal government and its plans for New Mexico and the nearby #WIPP site."
