Since the war in ramped up last year I have been drawn more towards the concept of .
But let's be honest, the longer we keep around and the more we have of them, the higher the chance of blowing up the planet. Not neccesarily due to actual war but by accident or mishap 🤯☢️💀

WTF?!

"..it is necessary to arouse the instinct of self-preservation that the West has lost and convince it that its attempts to wear Russia out by arming Ukrainians are counterproductive for the West itself. We will have to make nuclear deterrence a convincing argument again by lowering the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons set unacceptably high, and by rapidly but prudently moving up the deterrence-escalation ladder."

Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.
A ‘sure’ thing: more proof US nukes are coming to Britain
The Federation of American Scientists said that US Air Force budget documents dated March 2023 “strongly imply” that Washington is in the process of re-establishing its nuclear weapons presence in Britain for the first time in fifteen years. It follows reports last year that Lakenheath airbase in Suffolk was added to a list of US-operated airbases in Europe.

When I was a kid we were fed propaganda about the threat of nuclear war. I went to protests and camps at several US/ UK army bases. US nuclear arms were finally removed from Lakenheath 15 years ago! They are now set to be returning, their presence will make the UK a more likely target in any nuclear war! Watch this space for protests... here we go again!!! theguardian.com/world/2023/aug

Airbase project could pave way for UK to host US nuclear weapons

‘Potential surety mission’ at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk thought to refer to return of nuclear weapons after 15 years
The US air force has secured $50m (£39m) funding next year for a project that could pave the way for American nuclear weapons to return to British soil for the first time in more than 15 years.

> Since 1945 we have known that nuclear technology could generate cheap energy for the benefit of humans—but could also physically destroy human civilisation.

The article seems stupid, but part of it motivated me to see if Amitav Ghosh wrote about AI(Salami)
> We have always appreciated the power of stories...

is like a recent stringing together cliches that seem smart?

"Why didn't the Nazis beat Oppenheimer to the nuclear bomb?"

Good article in that is shows that there was no Nazi bomb "project," there was basic research. A project would involve vast industries to produce highly enriched uranium or having to invent nuclear reactors to manufacture plutonium. Only the US built those industries. Only the US had a "project" to build a bomb. Germany and Japan had basic physics research.

So when you hear about the Japanese bomb project, or the Nazi bomb project and some kind of race, that is just hyperbole.

The US military was more concerned of a Nazi dirty bomb than a nuclear bomb. Specially trained teams went ashore on D-Day with Geiger counters in anticipation of beaches salted with uranium particles. This also shows that the US (& others) understood the harm of internal exposures.
