I have lost track of the number of unions that have quit the International Federation of Journalists over alleged corruption, lack of transparency and more, and have every sympathy with those who have quit the IFJ.

Apropos of nothing, recently appointed as deputy general secretary of the IFJ was Tim Dawson: a longstanding member of the (British and Irish) NUJ executive, and its leading representative for freelance journalists.

Tim Davie's appearance before Committee last week was embarassing. Claiming that it's ok to make decisions that are detrimental for "only" 13% of the population - something has gone badly wrong. Solidarity with NUJ strikers!

Taking place now is the #NUJ's biennial conference. It is the first delegate meeting of my union that I've missed in many years.

While I'm largely indifferent, I have checked antisocial media coverage. The union has no presence in the fediverse, and few journalists appear to have left Twitter for Mastodon.

So that means following DM on Twitter. There is, I'm delighted to say, hardly any mention of the conference on Twitter, despite the union's promotion of the #DM2023 hashtag.

I have just watched an interview with Alison Millar, director of the film 'Lyra', a feature-length portrait of the acclaimed young Irish journalist Lyra McKee, who was murdered in 2019 by dissident republicans in Derry, from where she was reporting on a riot.

I've just been part of an excellent online session on #neurodiversity in the workplace, organised by the #NUJ. We need to better include this in the union's industrial training for reps, etc.

As vice-chair of trustees for a charity that provides financial aid for journalists in distress, I agree in part.

However, we are better placed than the state to do this work. The question is from whence the money comes.

The charity is called #NUJextra. We have assets of around €2.5m, and each allocate over €150k to #NUJ members in need. Being a trustee of NUJ Extra is the single most useful thing I've done as an NUJ member.

Needless to say, journalist #ErnestMoret wasn't involved in terrorism, and was arrested for refusing to give up his passwords. The #NUJ is on the case, providing support to our French colleague.
