As vice-chair of trustees for a charity that provides financial aid for journalists in distress, I agree in part.

However, we are better placed than the state to do this work. The question is from whence the money comes.

The charity is called #NUJextra. We have assets of around €2.5m, and each allocate over €150k to #NUJ members in need. Being a trustee of NUJ Extra is the single most useful thing I've done as an NUJ member.

Yesterday I spent interrogating three groups of #InvestmentFund managers who are applying to manage the €3m assets of benevolent #charity #NUJextra. For me this was a first, and put me well outside my comfort zone. Still, I'm learning much, and have acquired a whole new friily financial lexicon.
