She felt numb. Standing at the edge of the crowd, knowing he was at the centre, she couldn’t feel anything. Not excitement, not pride, not even jealousy or anger. She was there but she felt as though she may as well not have turned up. He was busy enjoying the limelight, the fanfare, the pure adulation. Somewhere, amongst the screaming fans, where she couldn’t see him, just the backs of heads and flashes from cameras that never seemed to stop. Maybe she wasn’t numb. Maybe she was lonely.

In the midst of the crowd, he felt numb. The joy he’d once felt at the devotion of the cloying masses had evaporated long ago. He’d learnt how to smile, how to wear the mask of happiness, but inside he was empty. He missed the anonymity. He missed the humdrum existence of struggle street. He missed her. Maybe he wasn’t numb. Maybe he was lonely.

Here, surrounded by thousands of bodies, looking for one face in the crowd. A face neither of them could see.
