The forum and fort in in . It had been made a colony for veterans in the first century during the reign of the Emperor Nerva.
The town was the birthplace in 124AD of the Numidian who wrote the only Roman novel, "The Golden Ass" or "Metamorphoses", to survive fully intact. He also coined the proverb "familiarity breeds contempt."
Saint of Hippo studied there in the 4th century.
