#Childcare is another aspect of 'broken Britain': with one half (54%) of all #nurseries already full for next year (some with waiting lists) & only 7% with many places available parents search for child care (if not yet successful) looks likely to be (as they say) 'challenging".

The Govt.'s support model is insufficient & drives nurseries to require top-up fees, staffing is often difficult & the stress of managing the situation takes its toll on operators.

Something need to change (and fast)!

One key aspect of the UK's shortage of #workers is the continuing crisis in the provision of #childcare;

Last year The Women's Budget Group estimated that around 1.7M women were prevented from expanding the hours they worked due to child care costs (or availability).

The reduction in #childcare spaces continues as do cost pressures on #nurseries & their clients....

This (or the next) Govt. needs to get a grip on the childcare crisis!

According to @ft #PrivateEquity is snapping up UK #nurseries . The business model is apparently “consolidate for economies of scale”, although one suspects an industry that can get away with a lot of leverage is also attractive. Even taking them at their word: the idea that you can replicate human interactions at scale is dangerous nonsense. Good #Childcare is about individual care, not about good recipes for it. And that’s to say nothing about the effect on prices.

One of my favorite local #nurseries is selling #Myrmecophytes, one of my favorite types of #plants. Unfortunately, only two species are labeled -- #Hydnophytum puffi, which I already have, and #Myrmecodia beccarii, which I'm not that interested in. The other two look like #Myrmephytum beccarii and Hydnophytum papuanum, both of which I already have. Still, though, it is nice to see and hopefully a sign of things to come. They were also next to a tray of various #Sarracenia!
