I've been watching #TheVow (docuseries about the #NXIVM cult), and it's been difficult at times because of the familiarity of so much of it as someone from an evangelical background.

I mean the "curriculum" has #BillGothard and #IBLP written all over it so to speak.

Anyway, the familiarity doesn't surprise me, but it's weird watching and going "that's classic cult behavior" and then thinking up half a dozen similarities with communities I've been exposed to. #CultDeprogramming #ReligiousTrauma

While I'm musing about #nxivm: An index of the #keithraniere's charisma is that he was able to convince people that he was committed to altruism despite both a record of being legally sanctioned for running a pyramid scheme and open affinity for the ideology of Ayn Rand.

Finished watching #TheVow. While season one was compelling albeit problematic (particularly in its credulous handling of Mark Vicente: "What the bleep did he know, and when the bleep did he know it?"), season two was more troubling. Nancy Salzman repeatedly compromises her narrative of victimhood, but the filmmakers let her sweep enough under the rug (ahem, $500k in cash discovered on the premises of her home) that the viewer has to ask similar questions about them: Dupes or accomplices? #nxivm
