The librarian at #NYAM was grabbing some rare books from me from the locked shelves in the reading room. (Some original copies of Laennec's work on lung disease.)

When she pulled them down, another book caught her eye: a copy of a medical treatise from the 16th century, reprinted in Kyoto in the 17th century. It was a gorgeous book, but one which neither of our expertises could make heads or tails of.

It reminds me of what my #medievalist colleagues always say: the medieval world is much larger, and much more vibrant than westernized accounts of that history would say.

Back at the New York Academy of Medicine (#NYAM) for the second half of a fellowship. After a lengthy chat with the librarian (who is wonderful. Librarians are the best), the two of us went to look at the dozens of books I had requested, and pulled out (partly on happenstance, partly because it stuck out on the cart) one of the wilder books I've come across.
